Default Free Agency

The draft is tonight but the Raptors have already pulled the trigger on their big play. As it stands now they no longer have a first rounder and they have no 2nd rounder. So, being that its near the end of June its time to start thinking about how Colangelo will use that Mid Level Exception.

2008 Free Agency: Presented by HoopsHype.Com

The Raptors need a wing, preferably a guy who can play the 2 and 3. A guy who can get to the basket but who can also knock down shots. Please remember that the MLE this year probably won't exceed $6M per year so guys like Josh Smith just aren't an option. Here is my list of targets who I think should be on the radar:

R - Restricted Free Agent

SG
Tony Allen(R)
Devin Brown
Antoine Wright
Yakhouba Diawara (R)
JR Smith (R)
Kelenna Azubuike (R)
Ronald Murray
Bonzi Wells
DerMarr Johnson
CJ Miles (R)

SF:
James Posey
Eduardo Najera
Matt Barnes
Dorell Wright (R)
Bostjan Nachbar

There is always the possiblity of them looking for a PG or another big. In that case I would look at:

PG:
Daniel Gibson
Jose Juan Barea (R)
Shaun Livingston (R)
Carlos Arroyo
Louis Williams (R)
Beno Udrih
Roger Mason Jr.

BIGS:
Kwame Brown
Ronny Turiaf (R)
Michael Doleac
DeSagana Diop
Chris Andersen
Adonal Foyle
Brian Skinner
Robert Swift (R)
Francisco Elson

I think Posey would be the perfect fit for us right now. Can provide offense when needed, but is an underrated defender in my opinion. I like him alot.

don't forget duhon... he's a UFA and would be a perfect fit behind jose! He's more than expendable for the bulls now and could bring some scoring and some smarts off our bench. If delfino leaves Azubuike would be NICE, I like his game, he's got some potential

i'm targeting Azubuike and Mason Jr. even Arroyo would be a nice fit.
not the biggest names on the list, but they can be had for cheap and would help bolster the club.

Here's the thing with only the MLE to work with, you're not going to find the perfect player. The Biggest Risk/Payoff this off-season would probably be JR Smith. I'm not saying he should be their guy.

I personally love what Tony Allen could bring to this club.

SASHA VUJACIC!!
Haha.
Right now I'm looking at Diop, Gibson, and Posey. If we really want to become contenders, let's go after the guys with higher potential like Deng and Gordon. J-Smooth and AI2.

$6M isn't going to land you either one of those guys. Maybe multiply that by two for Deng and Smith. All three are impossibilities.

yea i have to agree azubuike had a good season with the warriors so did mason with the wizards. Arroyo is okay but isnt that good but if the raps got azubuike or mason it would make them better.

I really like Azubuike, got an all around game, very good athlete, also made a few clutch shots for GS last season, which is probably one of the biggest needs after the addition of JO, Tony Allen also would fit in nicely, i like the fact that he has to attack the rim, considering his jumper is awful, and he plays great D

Posey has a player option for next season.

I'm going to say he probably wants to stay right where he is.

The mid level, and veteran minimum contracts. That's all BC is working with.

I say Azubuike or Posey. Both (especially Posey) would be very nice upgrades on the wing.

Also, could be wrong, but I was reading on tsn.ca that the Raptors do infact have a second rounder now, as Indy threw 41 in with the deal.

There will certainly be point guard depth available there. 4 year college guys who have a limited ceiling, in the Duhon mold.

If they do have a second rounder now I hope they go after Bill Walker. That guy has some mad hops and likes to play D.

If they do it would be a huge pick up. Especially if they feel they're going to lose Tony Allen in free agency.
