Ford: Valanciunas would be the #2 pick in 2012 draft

Valanciunas has been performing at a very high level this year in Europe. If he was in the 2012 NBA draft, where would he be picked?

Chad Ford (1:43 PM)

I think he'd be the No. 2 pick hands down. Looks like the Raptors got a steal at No. 5 last year.

most of us didn't like this move.. but I think it will turn out to be a great pick for the Raps...

and you don't have to worry about European players leaving.. they love T.O

Well i remember many of you were saying that he will be a bust and that he is just another soft euro, and saying that BC is the most stupid GM ever for picking him at 5.

I was pissed. I knew very little about him and what had heard was mixed. But once i learned more about him i became a fan and am excited.

LET'S GO RAPTORS!!!!! 02-29-2012 04:08 PM

I understood why JonasV was picked when they selected him, scoring/shoot first PGs aren't hard to find (Kemba (who I and many have deemed could be like A.Brooks) and Knight (who I and many others say is similar to JB)), Kawhi is similar to JJ, did we really need another undersized big (Biyombo) ?

In retrospect, with the lockout, the pick looked even better. BC probably considered that. On fan590 BC said he couldn't wait for the next 4 months to be over (aka the season). It is a bad thing but at least he was honest, 2 rotation players are arriving next season in JonasV, and MKG/Barnes/Beal/Lamb.

All im saying lets not rush to put tags on the players who are not even in the nba yet and are so young. IMO we should trade for more picks you never know when will you land a late bloomer..

well there goes his hopes for ROY award ;)

He did have a great under 18 tournament when he was named MVP. However, from previous threads, some members said he was struggling or showing marginal improvement from last year.

Really? Lately i've seen his stats and they've mostly been impressive.

Woah, that's crazy! GO BC

I remember loving the selection.... most wanted Kemba or Knight.... and while I admit I thought the TT pick by Cleveland was poor, he does look like an athletic version of Ed Davis. JV is awesome though and I think I've had a mancrush on him since we drafted him!

There were quite a lot of us that liked the pick. It has meant a pretty rough season this year though, so I don't completely blame anyone for impatience. And I do remember people pissed at the fact that he wouldn't be coming over right away as much as the usual complaints against "soft euros".

TORaptor4Ever 02-29-2012 09:30 PM

I thought that Kemba would be a bit better than he's shown.... but it's still early.

I was also intrigued by Kawhi Leonard. Spurs seem to be bringing him along slowly.

Ligeia 02-29-2012 10:17 PM

I was hoping for Leonard or Knight at the time. However, I wasn't upset with the Valanciunas pick because it seemed like after Irving and Williams, there was no real consensus on who would be drafted when. Several here also knew that Valanciunas had a different style of play than several other European centers, and was a young player full of promise. So I remember a lot of people being either ambivalent, intrigued, or excited.

I'll be a bit snobby and say that a lot of the complaints about Valanciunas came from part-time or new Raptors/NBA fans. The kind you often read in the comments on TSN.

Anyway, it is not often you get a prospect like Valanciunas. I'm really excited to see what he can do.
