Raptors Forbes: Raptors worth 520Mil

Quote:
#18
Current value: $520 million
Revenue: $149 million
Operating profit: $29 million

Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Raptors, NHL's Maple Leafs and Toronto FC of the MLS, made a splash with the hiring of Tim Leiweke who spent 17 years building AEG into a global sports power. Leiweke has his work cut out for him with the Raptors, who have missed the playoffs five straight years and finished last in its division during the 2012-13 season. Despite the losing, the Raptors finished last season with the highest attendance since the 2008-09 season, including 11 sell-outs, also a four-year high. Toronto was awarded the 2016 NBA All-Star game in September.

This surprises me.........

Quote:
#22 Indiana Pacers
Current value: $475 million
Revenue: $121 million
Operating profit: $12 million

Fans are finally embracing the Pacers after seven straight seasons of ranking 25th or worse in attendance. Individual ticket sales were up 50% before the start of the 13-14 season and package sales jumped 30%. The Pacers became the first NBA team to sell on-court advertising in October when they inked a two-year deal with the Indiana Economic Development Corp. The NBA relaxed its rules about on-court ads before the season and the Pacers were the first team to take advantage.

why, indianapolis is pretty tiny and fairly poor, should probably be even lower
don't correlate winning with value, winning is temporary, value is based on much longer time spans. If indy goes in the tank in 5 years, they'd be hard pressed to turn a profit in there. We earned 28M extra WITHOUT the benefit of 12 playoff games and with a large portion of the revenues being equal across the league (TV and related).

toronto should be much higher, but I think forbes has a bit of winning bias in their numbers. I bet if the Raptors go 2 rounds in the playoffs, next year we'd jump to top 10. I would imagine the Raptors are a top 6 franchise money wise.

As shown here, they were middle of the pack in profits while paying close to the tax and having a terrible record. TOR's in good shape financially, for sure.

Raptors are a steal if that was actually the real price point for all teams.

Middle of the league in profits/revenue with our history.....that's impressive imo.

yeah, and keep in mind that one major source of revenues that separates teams are the local tv revenues, which I believe are not shared, or at least not 100%. And we must do pretty bad in that area, as the ratings for the team are rarely any good.

they probably make a shitload on corporate boxes and merchandise. And the average ticket prices must be top 5-10. Not sure how those are shared with the rest of the league though.

Actually, our local TV ratings are usually pretty good. If i remember correctly in 2010 we were 5th in the league in local TV ratings in the NBA. Not sure now, but i'd say we're top 10. What kills us is the rest of the country, which to be completely honest i don't give two shits about.

Exactly... with the teams we have had and that we never played a playoff game that gets added into revenue/profit. Also think TL will improve lots of areas.

Yeah, now way MLSE would sell the Raptors for even close to that little. Easily has the potential to be a top 5 franchise.
