The skinny
The NBA's lone team based outside the U.S. has had the most international flavor in recent years. Last year's squad featured up and coming point guard, Jose Calderon (Spain), 2006 top overall draft pick Andrea Bargnani (Italy), and four other foreign-born players. Part of this heavy international presence can be attributed to GM Bryan Colangelo who compiled very international rosters with the Phoenix Suns before coming to the Raptors in 2006 and winning Executive of the Year his first season. Colangelo even hired Maurizio Gherardini as his assistant GM. Gherardini had been GM of Italy's famed Benetton Treviso club, and he became the first European to hold a senior management position with an NBA franchise. The Raptors are part of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, which also owns the NHL's Maple Leafs and Air Canada Centre and is among the most lucrative enterprises in professional sports.

Major corporate sponsors are PepsiCo (nyse: PEP), Bank of Montreal (nyse: BMO), Miller Brewing, Adidas, Canon (nyse: CAJ). Naming rights sponsor is Air Canada.

Yeah it's 7 months old, but not much has changed. The team is probably still worth the same. Impressive imo.

of course it is, the tickets are very expensive and we're selling out most games. Not to mention the huge number of private boxes who are all sold at package with leafs games.

And, to be faird, we have almost always spent all the way to the luxury tax. And, as Bryan mentioned last year, if there's a chance to make a difference, it's not excluded to go over that.

11th most valuable team, but we are still trying to save a penny. The team has a lot of money in which they don't spend on trying to get other players. Denver is way lower than us and they still have a deeper team and a higher payroll.

why?

SA, PHX, Houston and Detroit rarely go over the tax and they do fine

you should be happy they make money b/c it means they'll say in Toronto

MLSE will go over the tax once they see a contending team, b/c they'll get some playoff money in return
there is no reason to pay tax for the hell of it, like you have seen the Knicks do for years

I rather have a healthy franchise than one with red ink (then we would sell all off our players, like what Milwaukee and others are doing)
