I disagree with your premise that winning equals profit. It does to a certain extent, yes, but what we should be looking at is the ratio of spending to profits; if they have to spend 40% more than they are now to become a winning franchise (read: perennial playoff team and championship contender) and by doing so they garner, let's say, 15% more overall profit (which for the sake of this example would be less in terms of raw numbers) then in that case, winning would actually not be considered worthwhile for a profit-only entity. It is this type of economic logic that reinforces having bottom-feeding profit makers like the Leafs & Raptors.

the profit motive is tied to the brand recognition for the newcomers. MLSE was run by a bunch of conservative bean counters. All that mattered was selling seats and retaining value. It wasn't much different than real estate for them. Rogers or Bell would have the chance to magnify the simple equation that MLSE used. They could see profits grow with higher ratings that come with success. I think on the basketball end it would be most apparent, since a losing team is going to cause a sharp decline in ratings. In general, it wouldn't just be about bums in seats and achieving a reliable status quo - it would be about overall interest and how that could effect advertising revenue over a whole range of content.

In the end I don't give a shit who owns this team as long as they want to win and put a product on the floor that gets better.

Really, winning is all they should care about. If thats the case then to me I honestly don't care who's running the helm as long as they hold that belief

Why does it matter? Like Doc said, all the fans care about in the end is winning.

I wish we DID have a guy like Mark Cuban. He might look like he's acting like a fool to some of us, but he lives and breathes Mavericks. A guy like him, TO would support 100% all the way.

I just want this whole situation to hurry up and play out, it's bad enough there is a lockout next year and Colangelo's contract hasn't been renewed. All this uncertainty is making me uncomfortable.

you guys shouldnt be so discouraged about this.

The difference between Teachers and Rogers/Bell is that teachers is a pension fund. Their only concern is making a profit. Winning losing whatever, it doesn't matter..the only thing that matters is Making profit.

Rogers Bell have a little more vested in these teams because a winning team will not only mean more people in the seats and more merchandise being sold, but it will also mean higher TV and radio ratings (590...1050) which will mean more advertising dollars.... which will mean even more profits. A winning team for either of these corporations is a lot more favorable for them. Teachers was only concerned with making sure they didnt LOSE money....and since they could still make money with losing teams, there was no reason to take any unnecessary risk in trying to make them win. For a pension fund, Profit is the ONLY thing they care about....yes winning would prob make more money it was obviously a risk that was not worth taking.

I suggest we kidnap Bargnani, hold a $1B ransom for him. After BC pays up, we will buy the Raptors.
