Default Foot on the Line: Season in Waiting - Evaluating Chris Bosh

Good read.

Since he was drafted in 2003 as a 4th pick overall, Chris Bosh spent all his professional basketball career with Toronto Raptors. After infamous and painful departure of Vince Carter, he became a face of the franchise and a new hope. Although rather skinny and not freakishly athletic, he proved to be a really good power forward, averaging the magical 20-10 previous year, and being selected an All Star for 4 years.

But there's also been a dark side of his career. Lots of fans expected him to carry the team on his back and win all the games for Raptors, dribbling like Iverson, dunking like Dwight Howard and shooting like Ray Allen. He didn't achieve it and couldn't carry the pathetic last year's Raptors roster to the promise land of second round of the playoffs. He also started complaining about fans booing the team and looked disinterested in multiple games which deepened the suspicions that he's already packed his backpack to move to New York in 2010.

This offseason was supposed to answer the question - are we trading CB and starting allover again, or are we trying to give him a supporting cast, to actually convince him that we mean the business, are willing to win and want to keep him. Fortunately for Raptors fans and their everlasting patience, Bryan Colangelo chose option 2. He added really good pieces or maybe even redefined the team again. Shrinking salary cap might be another reason for Bosh to reconsider staying with the team that can pay him the most. And if he cannot win with that roster - can he win at all? With Kobe? Well, Adam Morrison can win with Kobe, too...

Advantages:

- 20+ points per game, 10 rebounds. Not many NBA players are capable of these numbers.
- Good jump shot for a big man. Sometimes, too good for you to feel comfortable. Maybe he'd drive more if his jumper was worse? Really good from a three throw line.
- He wants to be paid biggest possible dollars next year, so he's gonna play his butt off. If you remember, how good he was without that kind of effort, think how good he'll be dreaming about the contract of his life.
- He showed he can be a pretty good defender in Olympics. If he can somehow incorporate his defensive skills into the regular season games, that will mean bad news for opposing power forwards and centers.
- He is 25, still capable of improving.

Disadvantages:

- Relies on a jumper a little too much. I know, your jump shot is better, that, for example Shaq's, but it wouldn't hurt if you drove just a little bit more.
- Bad PR. From being a sore loser and accusing Shaq of camping in the paint, to the baby-mama-drama... I blame Hadi.
- He seems to be really afraid of Kevin Garnett.

To put it altogether, I believe we are facing Bosh's career year next season and we can expect really great things from him. Is he worth max dollars? Not at this moment, but if he can prove that he can win having a good supporting cast, sure.

I'd hope to see him get just a little bit meaner this season. The Kevin Garnett fear got really obvious at times - and i'd like to see him put that behind him and get a little more badass.

Still unconvinced that he can be a max player, but i'm not going to write off that prospect. Let's see what he shows us this season.

Baring major unjury, Chris Bosh will have a career season like most players in a contract year.

hmmm, this sounds exactly like all of the things i have been saying here and on the various other sites i write for... i wonder if he has been using my stuff....

I love bosh, but he needs to step it up to show he is worth the max deal he so longs for... i look forward to seeing him step up to the challenge now that he is no longer the 1st, 2nd and 3rd offensive option on this team...

Maybe Bosh won't have to step up his game, maybe he will only have to step up on the defensive end...

Then we can pay him less then the Max, thus saving our franchise mega dollars!!

I would like to see him step it up defensively. We have all seen what he can do on the defensive end of the floor in the Olympics. If he plays well on defense he deserves a max deal for sure. With Jack, Bosh and Wright all playing nice defense--- Damn I am getting excited! I think we can suprise some teams people!

He should have a great year offensively as teams will have a hard time doubling with bigs like Bargs and Hedo. Things should open up for him and he needs to take the ball to the rack!

The only thing I'd like to see Chris improve on is rebounding and defense. Other than that, hes good enough, and asking for any more would be asking for too much.

You can never ask too much of your "franchise player."

I can think of three things he needs to work on, besides rebounding and defense:

-Minimizing the number of times he takes that awful fade-away
-Post moves
-Right hand
