Five lessons the Raptors can learn from the NBA finalists

Quote:
When either the Los Angeles Lakers or Boston Celtics hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy on Thursday night after winning Game 7 of the NBA final, the other 29 teams in the league will start scurrying to find ways to topple them next year.

Some will look to glaring differences between what they do and what the truly good teams do; here are five startling differences between the finalists and the Raptors.

Grow together: Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher have played together forever, Lamar Odom’s been a Laker for six years and Pau Gasol’s been there three. The Celtics have used the same starting five for what seems like eons and the current group of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Kendrick Perkins has built up a tremendous familiarity in three seasons together.

The Raptors? Well, they had nine new players a year ago and could have half a dozen new faces next fall.

Get the point?

Stability at the top, too: For as long as the players have been together, they’ve also heard the same voice for what must seem like forever, and the relationships that exist between Phil Jackson and his Lakers and Doc Rivers and his Celtics are hugely significant in the teams’ success. It’s not as much about X’s and O’s with coaching, it’s about trust and managing relationships and it takes time.

The Raptors have had seven coaches in 15 years, with none serving longer than Sam Mitchell’s tenure.

I think what needs to be learned most is the toughness and battling that both these teams possess and demonstrate nightly.... what an awesome series... they both make it very difficult for referees, no wonder there has been so many bad calls.

I understand it would be hard for Raps to get those calls, but if you always play that way, eventually you force them to make the calls in your favour too. The LAL-BOS series has been awesome to watch. Close second for me was LAL-OKC

What I noticed most about the last 4 teams in the playoffs (ORL, PHX, BOS, LAL) is that every one had multiple CONSISTENT weapons on offense and good, tough athletes on defense.

MLSE and BC are going to have to realize that this team is going no where if it's constantly going to rely on a single star to carry the team.

7 HC's in 15yrs. Why is that surprising considering only 1 has had any experience coming into the job?

If we hired an experienced HC, obviously it wouldn't be a short term committment.
