Raptors FINAL: Toronto 97 - Boston 89

Not televised, but what the hell. I'm guessing it'll be streamed.

Two Atlantic Division foes that underwent massive offseason change in very different ways open preseason play Monday when the Raptors visit the Celtics at TD Garden in Boston (7:30 PM ET).

The Raptors are coming off a fifth straight season without a playoff appearance and after some significant off-court transformation, there’s still little to suggest exactly which direction the team is heading long-term.

Fresh off winning an Executive of the Year award with the Denver Nuggets, Masai Ujiri returned to the Raptors this summer to replace Bryan Colangelo as president of basketball operations and general manager. Ujiri proceeded to make changes to his front office personnel, scouting staff and assistant coaches and yet the Raptors will start the preseason with an element of continuity with their roster.

Dwane Casey survived the turnover and enters his third year as head coach. Casey has expressed his intent to get back to the tough defence the Raptors played back in 2011-12, where they posted a defensive rating in the top half of the league after two straight seasons at or near the bottom.

Casey will have the core components of the roster that went 30-29 final 59 games of 2012-13 — including the starting five of Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay, Amir Johnson and Jonas Valanciunas.

But it was a dreadful 4-19 start to the regular season that effectively torpedoed the Raptors’ payoff hopes early last season, which came on the heels of a 6-1 exhibition record.

Casey suggested at Sunday’s practice in Boston that the approach to preseason play this season is likely to change with a fully healthy roster and new faces to integrate such as forward Steve Novak (acquired in a package for Andrea Bargnani) along with forwards Tyler Hansbrough and Austin Daye plus guards D.J. Augustin and Dwight Buycks (signed as free agents).

“We ended up playing our veterans a lot of minutes [last season] and this year is more seeing who can play, looking at different rotations and different positions. We still want to win every time we step on the floor, but more growing, more experimenting than anything else.”

Change has also been the major theme for the Celtics, as core elements of their recent championship DNA in Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and head coach Doc Rivers are all gone.

Former Butler University head coach Brad Stevens has taken over for Rivers and inherits a roster clearly in a transition phase in his first NBA stint.

Factor in the absence of electric point guard Rajon Rondo (torn right ACL) and roles, rotations and even starters are up in the air on the eve of their first preseason game.

“I just told the guys, and I told you guys this yesterday, we’re going to be tinkering with lineups quite a bit,” Stevens told Celtics.com on Sunday. “I don’t know what we’ll do in games 2, 3 and 4, but I’m guessing we will not start the same lineup. I’m guessing we’ll really shift things around.”

Here's hoping Ross can have a solid preseason and build up some confidence. As for this game in particular, it's a shame it's not televised, but we'll be watching games starting Wednesday so it's not too bad.

I found few streams, I'm guessing there will be couple more around 7pm. Where can I post them? Didn't want to create new thread, because last time they were showing up as a virus (even though they are not) and LX had to delete them.

They weren't the cause of the virus or whatever malware, as far as I know. I just deleted them because I thought there was a chance it would solve the problem, because there were some malware-type links within some of the sites that streamed games. So go ahead and make a thread. In this case it should be fine to post them in here, since there is no licensed local broadcast.

I would have thought so, but there is nothing on my guide for NBAtv showing this game.

Celtics-Raptors preview: Bradley's new gig | Comcast SportsNet - CSNNE.com

Quote:
BOSTON — Avery Bradley has done this filling-in-for-Rajon-Rondo thing before.

But this time it's different.

In the past he was aided by having Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett around who took much of the pressure to perform off of him.

But with Pierce and Garnett having had their talents shipped to Brooklyn and Rondo's return from a torn ACL injury still up in the air, Bradley will be looked upon to provide more than just solid play.

The fourth-year guard appears to be up to the challenge with the Celtics' preseason kicking off tonight against the Toronto Raptors at the TD Garden.

Although head coach Brad Stevens plans to shuffle his lineups throughout the preseason, Bradley at the point should be the one constant.

"He's really worked," Stevens said. "He's watching extra film. He's trying to get as good as he can be. His attitude has been fantastic."

But as good as Bradley has been, he knows he's simply keeping the seat warm until the Celtics' leader - Rondo - returns to the court.

"I'm trying not to do too much. I'm not Rondo; Rondo's one of a kind," Bradley said. "So I'm going to go out and play the way I play and make everything simple and just go from there. That's the key for me because I'm not going to make all the plays that he's going to make. I can keep improving every single game, keep it simple."

Part of Bradley's improvement heading into this season stems from him being more experienced.

"I'm more confident," Bradley said, adding, "I'm going to go hard every single day. It doesn't matter, practice, game, I'm always going to go hard. I'm going to try and be that example for the younger guys and for some of my other teammates who might be tired. I want us to push each other everyday so we can be the best team we can be."

Also, Doug Smith just said on Tim and Sid that DJ could be a "very good starting PG" if Lowry goes down.

I don't think it's that far-fetched a statement.

DJ is going to be interesting. If he puts it all together, which is possible, then Lowry could be expendable. I like Lowry, but I wouldn't mind seeing good things coming back for him, especially when there is a fair bit up in the air in the offseason.

Well, I do think that that Augustine will be better then most expect. For some reason some think he's a scrub. I just laugh when I hear Doug Smith talking basketball. I always hear the benny hill theme in my mind when listening to him.

didn't DJ beat out felton at one point? Dude was considered a good young PG.... I don't see why he can't regain that hype, especially if he utilizes JV and Amir on the pick and roll while finding Novak out on the perimeter.
