What’s tonight going to be like?

It’s a routine pre-season game, it’s really not a big deal whatsoever but it’s Bargnani Back and I guess it adds a bit of juice to the night but I hope it doesn’t add too much.

I’m sure there will be boos – hell, he heard boos when he was here, why would it change when he’s somewhere else – but I cannot imagine it will reach any significant level.

Will it?

It’s certainly not going to be like Vince or Bosh or Tracy or Damon – and that’s probably how I’d rank ‘em on the Venomometer over the years – I don’t presume.

Look, here’s the simple fact about the guy and his time here:

He was what he was; a non-rebounding jump-shooting stretch four or five and that’s precisely what he was advertised the day he arrived. No one ever said he’d get eight boards a day or be a leader or be one of the all-time greats.

We knew from the very start that he was a bit laconic (I remember Maurizio telling us right off the bat: “Andrea is the most un-Italian Italian you’ll ever meet”) and that he’d make some shots and never be a leader. It wasn’t expected, it wasn’t delivered, he turned out to be just a guy who appeared in a bunch of playoff games and someone who had some good nights and some bad nights. Nothing more, not much less.

Sure, he’ll get ripped and it’ll be a talking point and some of us will yawn because looking back and hindsight are futile exercises in a lot of ways. Playing the “what if” game isn’t worth it in so many instances. For one – and this is the big one – nothing in sports is linear. It’s easy to say, well, if they took this guy and then that guy and this other thing that eventually happened happened, the world would be a better place.

But that’s inherently ridiculous because if the first move is different, the rest of the moves are different, things don’t turn out the same way and to even spend a second thinking they would makes no sense.

Bargnani’s time here, at the end, was a disappointment. He was hurt too often (I don’t know how hard he worked to rush back from anything and that was an issue from when he had his appendix out years ago) and after seven years, it was simply time for him to go.

It was better for him, it was better for the franchise and that Masai turned him into Steve Novak and a couple of surely so-so draft picks was, I guess, pretty good return.

He was booed while here so he'll be booed when he comes back. It's nothing new in sports.

I agree. The issue I have with booing him is the fact that he never bad mouthed the city or the organization and didn't demand a trade as far as we know. His play was booed as it should be but beyond that who cares. But he absolutely will be booed.

I hope the bench's defense doesn't suck this game.

From what I've seen of the invitees they look pretty underwhelming too.

I think he will be, but he shouldn't be really. This is not vince Carter quitting on a team or bosh/tmac bailing out. This is a guy who just wasn't who we thought he was. And now we got rid of him and we got a pretty good deal too. He always talked well about TO, despite the fact that he got a little abused in his last season. And he was a fairly classy guy all in all. It sucks for us he didn't reach his potential but such is life - if we boo him we may as well boo most of our current team too ...

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. (Albert Einstein) - that is/was Bargs and his tenure here.

As part of the big Andrea Bargnani Return for tonight’s Raptors-Knicks pre-season game – and an NBA pre-season game needs all the hype it can get to be interesting – there are two things Bargnani is sure to hear.

Boos from the fans.

And Primo Pasta jokes for his former teammates.

“I miss those Primo pasta commercials, they don’t play those no more before the game this year,” Amir Johnson said about the relentless ad campaign that centred on Bargnani for seasons.

And it was part of the team routine during his last year in Toronto.

“I loved them, we teased him every day about that,” said Johnson.

“’Do you got some Primo for us?’”

‘“No, I don’t eat that.”

So there you have it, the spokesman wasn’t in love with the product.

Quote:
That was about as newsy as it got as 20 or so reporters tried to poke and prod and cajole Bargnani into tearing a strip off the team he played seven seasons for.

He wouldn’t play along.

“I don’t know,” he said about the expected reaction tonight. “I don’t really think about that. I was lucky to play here for seven years, this is a great organization, great fans, that’s all I’ve got to say, just positive stuff.”

Too bad, because there’s not likely to much positive coming from the stands; if that bothers Bargnani, he’s not letting on.

“Again, for me the most important thing is I played here for seven years,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of fans here because I see that from twitter and Facebook. I was lucky to play here, it is a great city, great organization, great fans. I just have positive things to say.”
