Default Feschuk: Ukic keeping it real

Really good article by Dave. I like the realism I'm hearing from Ukic. At least he knows his faults.

Thankfully, there appears to be at least one tell-it-like-it-be realist in the club's inner midst. He is Roko Ukic, the Croatian point guard, and he is not afraid to tell the world about his weaknesses.

His long-range jump shot, for instance, is suspect.

"I got some air balls in the practices so far," said Ukic the other day. "I just need to reduce this."

And as for his defence?

"I never had a problem on defence in Europe," he said. "But I expect I will go through some tough times here."

His self-assessment stands in stark contrast to usual delusional self-belief. And the kid's not being too hard on himself. His first NBA season should be a lot like his jumper – a jarring leap forward.

I'm starting to get more and more skeptical of Roko and his abilities. Outside of maybe one good day in camp last week during their time in Ottawa, Roko sounds lost on the court and very tentative.

Give him time, that is why soloman is here. by the end of the season all will sing the praises of Lenny.

I think the same thing that happened to JOse will happen to Ukic. At one point Ukic might me better and who knows we might trade Jose away like we did with Ford.

Nobody should really be surprised about the struggles. elT warned us all years ago. The nice thing is that Roko isn't trying to dismiss his own struggles.

I have to wonder how he could end up with such a fundamentally unsound shot though. Isn't Europe supposed to produce the opposite sort of result?

Garbo got the same problem with his long-range jumpers ... 3-pointer distance is longer in NBA than Euro League, it takes time to adjust. Plus the dynamics of game is different ...

The European players use to know what they have to do every moment on the court, more than shooting or other skills (not saying they haven't them).

Ukic is a PG, so the fundamental thing for him was to run the team, so he just didn't practice his own skills out of that need IMO.
