Teachers' Rep Blocking BC's Extension?

Quote:

If Tanenbaum and his fellow directors support Colangelo — “Bryan has a plan and we back his plan as a board,” Tanenbaum said — why has Colangelo’s contract, which expires June 30, not been extended?

It’s because there remains at least one anti-Colangelo voice among the power brokers. That voice, multiple club sources confirm, belongs to Glen Silvestri, a representative of the organization’s majority owner, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan. Since the board has seven seats, three of which belong to Teachers’, and since another one of its members, CEO Richard Peddie, is essentially duty-bound to the majority owner, Colangelo isn’t likely to ink a new contract unless Silvestri comes around.

great, now we have a peddie 2 at MLSE - nothing like a chartered accountant when it comes to basketball knowledge. I bet he's an ESPN insider too :)

It really sucks to look over the fence at the Blue Jays and their bright future with AA at the helm, and then look at what we're dealing with in the Raptors organization.
Sheesh.

There are no better options than BC. Not if you want to improve.

But if he continues to stick to Triano and Bargnani, I might change my opinion

Unfortunately, I am an accountant too. I can understand where this guy is coming from. We put alot of value on the current track record to determine the future outcome. Let's face it, the Raptors have not made the playoffs for several years and lost its star player in the process. BC has swung for the fences and struck out. The only time BC has made a positive contribution to the organization is the last two drafts. He is an eye for talent. Let him have full control of the draft process, and when his contract expires, let it expire.

Sheesh.

Yeah well, it's extremely early to say the Jays future is bright. Although imo it looks very good. But also, how long has it been since they've been in the playoffs or have even got a sniff? It's taken a very long time for the Jays to get to where they are right now and there are absolutely no guarantees considering the division they play in and how young they are.

That being said, can't wait for baseball to start. :yeah:

The next time any Ontario political party includes, in any way, cuts to ontario teacher salaries in their platform... they have my vote. OTPP disgusts me and shoud not own a public passion. GTFO and sell already.

Renihan_00 03-14-2011 11:33 AM

I think that the city itself should consider the purchase of the teams.

Seriously.

It's as good an reason as any since I hate all political parties in Ontario lately. Maybe more people start talking and they start to take a hint.

dude. the teachers taking a hit to their salaries is not going to impact the way that their pension fund managers approach the ownership of sports assets. if you have a problem with mlse, your issue is not with teachers, it's with the massive company that manages their pensions. come on...

And recourse with the pension plan is what? Maybe this time they will actually follow through on the idea instead of just letting the tires get kicked. If this thought was shared widely enough it would at least demand their attention.

And I'm not going to argue the merits of teacher or their pay, only saying that if OTPP actually sold a service or product I would never buy it, and hence this...

'trane 03-14-2011 10:31 PM

you just said you would support a teachers pay cut as an election issue to prove a point about otpp's sports ownership. that's simply ludicrous. they (teacher salaries and otpp asset ownership) have nothing to do with one another.
