Arrow Feschuk: Friendship between Weems and DeRozan is a slam dunk

Quote:
Weems and DeRozan have been evening regulars at the Raptors' practice court, where they work on their jump shots long after official practice is over. They make up to 450 shots in a typical hour-long session. And yes, they are gifted with the luxury of one assistant coach, Eric Hughes, to tee up the ball, and another, Alvin Williams, with whom they play spirited games of one-on-one.

But, as Triano pointed out, not every young NBA player, given all the advantages of an access card to a palatial workout facility, sees it as his duty to hone his craft once official obligations are met. So while DeRozan's presence at those after-hours workouts was once mandatory – a team would be remiss in not demanding some extra work from a 20-year-old with a rookie-scale contract that could pay him more than $15 million (U.S.) all told – Weems, 23, made the smart choice of tagging along with his friend or, on days DeRozan's will was flagging, coaxing DeRozan into his sneakers.

Now Weems, making a team-low $736,420 this season, is one step closer to a bigger payday. Not bad for a guy who played a combined nine minutes in the season's first nine games.

"Maybe (Weems' recent success) is due to the friendship with DeMar. Maybe he's the one who's helped DeMar a little bit, I'm not sure," said Triano. "It's not mandatory for them to come back (to the gym in the evening) now, but it's habit."

Why are they such good friends, this despite essentially being rivals for the same perimeter playing time? Weems' childhood reality in gritty Memphis, while it was geographically distant from DeRozan's stomping grounds in Compton, aren't far removed.

"Two tough neighbourhoods," DeRozan said earlier this season.

Whatever the touchstones, Jarrett Jack, who, at a relatively ancient 26 passes for the duo's wise-cracking mentor, sees it as a perfect match: "Two weirdos."

Said Evans of Weems and DeRozan: "It's a unique relationship. I think the worst thing that could happen to them is if they had to split up. As time goes on, they may have to break apart. But right now, the only thing they can do is cherish each day."

Weems, whose future in Toronto isn't guaranteed unless the Raptors pick up a team option for next season, winced at the prospect of parting ways with his buddy.

"We'd still be friends," said Weems, on the prospect of parting ways with DeRozan.

"But that'd hurt."

Just because their friends doesn't mean its a 'bromance' lol. But ya hopefulley we can keep them around because they seem to want to succeed in this league unlike POB.

It will seriously break my heart if we don't sign Weems this offseason.

Based on his play this season though I'd say that he's got nothing to worry about there.

These guys need to stick around here for a while... they have the determination that winning teams need. Sonny Weems has a lot of potential to become a good player in this league; if he can patent that mid range jump shot and develop his range, he and DeRozan could provide for a good perimeter duo in the future for this franchise.

It's an ideal scenario for everyone involved here.

I don't see any reason why (with improvement) they can't be our starting SG and SF. I've actually liked that combo just because of their athleticism, something we have lacked at those positions since BC got here (Moon doesn't count because he didn't know how to use it).

If everyone had this kind fo relationship with thier counterpart, our team would improve by leaps and bounds.

Props to the young guys for setting a good example for the rest of the team. If they continue this kind of effort when they are veterans, they are the kind of vets you want because they would get everone else out there!

There's no way Weems isn't back next year. It's all but guaranteed.

Raps have a team option of $850K to sign Weems next year. Thats a slam dunk. He will be here for another season. He is a nice add on to a trade however.

Times I have witnessed them together.

1) Raptors Meet and Greet One. They were the two players (with POB) . They would never stray too far from each other. Weems was gregarious and loose with everyone laughing and talking with everyone. Derozan was scared and shy. A few times Weems would go over and give his kid brother (what it felt like) a bit of encouragement. Then Weems called Deroxan to join him at the DJ booth where they spun records and basically had a good time.

Meet and Greet Two: The two guys were not featured players. They were in jogging shorts and looked like they were out for a jog around the ACC and happened upon the Meet and Greet. ...or they just crashed the party. Either way, they stopped for a few minutes and let people take pictures of them for a few minutes...and they were off.

Raptors Red Party: The two of them were never too far apart from eachother.

Derozan and his webcam: Weems is always there...always...

It's a healthy friendship that is making each guy a better player. Here's hoping the Raps can keep them together.

2 good kids ... excellent to see that not all young BB players have an attitude.
They can grow into special contributing talent for the Raptors.

I remember the first time I saw Weems in the pre-season ... I couldn't believe he was a throw in on the trade and was clearly the most athletic player (including DD) on the roster.
He's physique is clearly better suited for the pounding of the NBA as compared to DD.

DD's body may fill-in ... he will need this to get to the next level. He gets bounced too easily at times when going to the basket.

I'm hoping Weems gets his skinny ass onto the weights....
