Colangelo actually attempted to sell his audience on the notion that MLSE is in these games to win these games.

“The plan is to win basketball games at whatever cost,” Colangelo said at one point.

I am not making this up.

“At whatever cost,” are the words he used.

That, folks, isn’t a sales pitch: It’s just a lie. The defending NBA champion L.A. Lakers are spending some $25 million (all figures U.S.) more than the Raptors on salaries this season — you can argue their plan is to win basketball games at whatever cost.

Heck, the Cleveland Cavaliers are outspending the Raptors by millions upon millions in their quest to keep LeBron James in town, this while Colangelo and MLSE are only now talking about possibly spending to keep Bosh. This week brought news that the Cavs have been losing many millions in the process. And yes, you should always distrust claims of losses with a lockout looming. But you can’t deny that Cleveland’s majority owner, Dan Gilbert, believes victory can’t be achieved on a balance sheet. And you just can’t say the same thing about Toronto’s owner.

That isn't relevant to the current situation. Theres no reason for the Raptors to go out and sign players to big contracts now that they are starting to get some flexibility.

How is it no longer relevant? When have they tried to win at all costs? When did cap flexibility turn into anything that would clearly make us anything close to a contender? They still have the chance to pay tax this season if they use all that TPE right? Now I don't think that should be a priority at this point, but when does this guy get held to his words exactly?

I don't think that BC has ever been constrained by management in not spending to go into luxury status.
Just spending money doesn't always bring success.
Even if we kept Bosh we couldn't have made a meaningful move.
If MLSE feels that a way over the cap team will fill the seats and add revenues they will do it in a flash. They have responsibilities to the teachers union as well.

Well, Colangelo was authorized to spend into the luxury tax to keep Bosh this year, and he expressed the opinion that it didn't make sense to spend into the tax with the current make-up of the team, post-Bosh.

That said, I agree with the central point: clearly MLSE has never spent like the top contenders, and the performance correlates with that.

I think in a few years we'll be over the salary cap (if it still exists). This is when our players develop and demand more dough (if they don't leave, lawl).

After the Raptors win game 7 of the NBA finals at the buzzer, the next day feschuk will write: "sure, they won a title, big deal. The celtics have 25, and Miami won 7 in the past 10 years. Let's not get overexcited after one win. Not to mention it took them 7 games, and nearly blew it at the end ..."

Dear David Feschuck:

#1. -There is a Salary cap in the NBA. Yes it's a soft cap, but there are still rules to building a good team. You can't just buy players like the Yankees and Red Socks.

#2. -We still have a $16M trade exception that may or may not be used. Our superstar just left us for virtually nothing. Ask Cleveland fans if they're feeling optimistic this season for a similar reason.

#3. -The summer isn't over yet. I know you have to sell papers, but quit being a twat.

Signed,

The loyal Raptor fanbase
