Default Feschuk: Calderon, Bricklayer to Swishmeister

Quote:
There has been on-court regression and in-the-stands depression in Raptorland this year. But if you're a glass-half-full kind of person, you still can find out-of-the-playoffs inspiration.

And perhaps nothing is more inspiring than the knowledge that Jose Calderon, the point guard whose 97.8 per cent free-throw shooting has him on pace to set the NBA single-season record for accuracy, was once a horrible free-throw shooter. Seriously, it was eight years ago, when Calderon was 21 and playing for Alicante of the Spanish league, that he shot 65 per cent from the line for a season.

Sixty. Five. Per. Cent. To put that in perspective, Shaquille O'Neal once shot 62 per cent from the line for a campaign, and the Big Clank has become synonymous with charity-stripe ineptitude. For Calderon to be where he is tonight in Orlando, having missed just three times in 138 attempts from the tack is a bit like the lamest student in Biology 101 graduating at the head of the class from the brain surgery academy.

Who manages that? Maybe nobody. If you look at the career numbers of the legendary shooters who stand atop the NBA's list of best free-throw-shooting seasons the list that Calderon will find himself atop if he keeps doing what he's done for the final nine games of the season you just don't see that kind of bricklayer-to-swishmeister story.

LOL that was a pretty funny article, but big-ups to Calderon for managing that and hopefully he does set the record for FT %

It's a heck of an accomplishment for sure. I would like to see him focus on upping his total shots taken from 138 to 338 as a start...and really exploit this weapon he has.

Wait...wait... hold on, hold the phone. Is this an article from Feschuk that almost has a sort of positive spin to it? This had to be an April Fools joke for sure

Actually that's true. 338 is a bit much, but more appearnces at the line would be nice, but at least you see it as an accomplishment. Others have said here that "it means nothing" because he never gets to the line. Those were the type of comments i was talking about.

i dont care... he needs to go on with risky passes to marion, and not focus on his ft % or his damn assists to turnover ratio.
stars back in the day didnt even know they were breaking records till statisticians came along

It would be great to see him get to 200, and not be at the bottom of the league for pg's FT attempts per 36 minutes. If he continues to be aggressive that should be no problem.

I remember one of the first times I saw him in action, when he was playing for Tau in the Spanish league finals. He missed a freethrow in the final seconds, and the opposing team ended up scoring and winning by a single point. I definitely appreciate the way he puts the work in, and from what I've seen lately, I think he might be able to work to improve his defensive effectiveness. I'd like that a lot.
