Raptors Feschuck: You mean to tell me these guys are pros?

Quote:
The Pacers, if you missed it, drilled 13 of 26 three-point attempts in a 124-100 blowout on Monday. And considering that barrage came a day after Sunday’s 17-point loss to the New York Knicks — wherein the Knicks nailed a dozen threes en route to an easy win — you wonder: Why do the Raptors keep making every swingman with a half-passable jump shot look like Larry Freaking Legend?

If Toronto’s all-round defence is among the worst in pro ball, its defence on the perimeter has been, in the past two games, downright sub-professional.

“We watch the other team play, and we don’t do anything,” was how Andrea Bargnani, the Raptors big man, summed up the recent work.
Quote:
On Monday, for instance, Raptors swingman Sonny Weems was repeatedly confronted with what’s known as a high screen — an offensive player essentially impeding his pursuit of the man he was supposed to be guarding. Weems had two choices. He could go over the screen — move his feet and fight through contact before his foe before got comfortable at the three-point line. Or he could go under the screen — that is, take the long way around the obstruction and, usually a beat too late, attempt to recover. Going over is the coach’s preferred option. Going under, again and again, was Weems’s choice. Swishes ensued. Even Weems’s teammates saw the elementary mistake being repeated.

“Yo, Sonny! You’ve got to get over!” hollered one Raptor from the bench in the early going.

“Over, Sonny, over!” yelled another.

When you couple the defensive ineptitude with another stark truth — that neither Weems, 24, nor fellow starter DeMar DeRozan, 21, has improved enough as a shooter to trade jumpers in a shootout — the problem is compounded. The Raptors are the second-worst three-point shooting team in the league. They simply can’t win a marksmanship contest.

Hmm, seems like both of them have low Basketball IQ. Or that they like doing things their way.

A fantastic assessment. Weems becoming more moon-like every game that passes.

AB is clearly on the ball about this too. I wish Sunny could get on board.

weems is a good man to man defender, but a poor perimeter defender
derozan is just a bad defender. they both need to sit down and watch a couple of fundamental basketball tapes.

After Tuesday’s undeserved day off here, the Raptors will gather at Madison Square Garden
I don't think he should have gave them a day off. I hope they prove me wrong but i think they will come out with no energy again because of this. Also they obviously need to work on their defence as a team, most of the time we are giving up easy buckets because of bad communication and bad or missed rotations. I don't know how they think its going to be different on wendesday if they haven't worked on it at all. I sense another blowout coming.

if Sonny just focused on Defence and took the open shot when the ball comes to him in the offence he would be a much better player, and have serious value

don't know why his agent hasn't explained this to him, Ariza was out of hte league because he wanted to be a offensive star with the knicks and magic, well once he got to the Lakers they transformed him into a defensive stopper and was rewarded a fat contract from Houston

Sonny has shown that he defend when he wants to, its just he doesn't do it

I just saw Leandro's response to the game. He said they just didn't have any luck. The Raptor's shots didn't go in. And the other team was very lucky, with their shots going in.

yeah well - you had to see Leandro's eyes. He sold it very well. It's all about the luck. Really. Basketball is just a series of random events.

We are a poor 3 point shooting team.
If we arent' playing defense .. we are done.
Good shooting teams with good spacing eat us up for lunch.

So all the championships that the lakers and awards kobe bryant receives are based on luck?

I wished we signed Barnes. He can teach a thing or two about perimeter defense. When Ed Davis polishes his offensive game, AMIR and Davis will be getting the bulk of the minutes when Bargs slouches on defense.

Get real... that's not happening. It's the perimeter D that is sorely lacking.

When Bargnani had two quick turnovers in the 1st quarter and putting little resistence to Roy Hibbert, Triano had a quick hook on Weems and Bargnani. I like Ed Davis and Amir as our front court for the future, Big men who hustle and play both ends of the floor.

That frontcourt is too small. it's not going to happen. Amir has been far more inconsistent than AB, and has often been overpowered inside. I understand AB may have some lapses, but he's the only guy on this team that can defend legitimate C's in this league. Amir is also not immune to defensive lapses also....

And Bargnani slowly reacting and half-assing his way out there to help trap the guard or wing player, but only managing a lame double where he stands behind the primary defender, really helps with all of that.
