Feschuck: Raptors, bright light in city of losers

Quote:
Consider the scene: With Toronto down six points late in the third quarter, the defending NBA champions looked as though they might just reel off a foe-crushing, game-sealing run. A few defensive stops here, a string of quick scores there, and suddenly the Lakers would be up 10 or 12 or more and coasting into the fourth quarter. And true to that disturbing trend, here came Bryant, driving to the hoop, bent on an easy two. The only thing standing between him and an eight-point lead was Chris Bosh.

What happened next was something Raptor fans haven't often seen. Bosh fouled Bryant, and fouled him hard. He clamped down on the would-be shooter's arms, sent Bryant tumbling to the floor, made certain there'd be no old-fashioned three-point play from the crafty former MVP. And if the violence appeared to surprise Bryant, it excited at least one other observer.

"I thought the key play in the game was when Chris didn't give Kobe (that) easy shot," Jay Triano, the Raptors coach, was saying on Monday.
Quote:
Leaf fans, in contrast, can't talk about the June draft (too depressing), the Marlies (in last place), the improvement curve of Phil Kessel (somehow out of shape), or even the cathartic sacking of their coach (at least until after the Olympics). Loyalists of the Jays can't get too high because the club's higher-ups have already declared their roster not good enough to compete, let alone spend more of Rogers' millions on. Argos supporters, meanwhile, can't possibly grouse about their owner, their general manager or their coach, because they can't be sure who any of those folks may or may not be next season. TFC's rabble is three months into the hangover of a 5-0 loss in a season-ending must-win, and presumably still drinking the memory away.

I swear, Feschuk does one column a week just devoted to Toronto being the "city of losers". It's getting old.

Okay, so we haven't won a championship since 93, but you can't keep repeating the same stuff week in, week out. It's stale.

Of course not, you love Hockey. In fact most puckheads think there isn't enough hockey....which is absolutely in sane.

The fact that they constantly cover losing teams and essentially sweep aside the Raptors, who are a playoff team is strange at best. But such is the life of a sports fan in this city/country, well ones who aren't infatuated with Hockey.

How much Raptors coverage do you need jeff or is just the principle?

You spend all day on a message board dedicated to scouring the internet to find even the samellest tidbit discussing them with a bunch of diehards. They have a whole television station primarily dedicated to them, all of their games are now televised (I suspect you weren't a fan back in the day when there were quite a few west coast/road games that didn't air) and you can watch online the scrum after every practice and shoot around and all the post game stuff. What more do you want?

Fair and ballanced coverage for the only team remotely close to the playoffs in this city, from the primary channels that don't have to be paid extra for. Then again, it's only gotten worse and i shouldn't waste my time complaining about it. Nothing will ever change, but this team should get alot more respect and recognition. We always complain about the US coverage and bullshit view on the Raptors, but the city they play in isn't much better. And message boards and having to scour the internet is something different all together and a seperate issue.

Fair and balanced coverage? Who cares and why does it matter to you so much? If the majority of poeple did care, they would get that coverage. I don't even watch sports news looking for Raptors related stuff as everything is online. This is the best it's ever been being a Raptors fan. We have access to stuff that we couldn't even imagined ten to fifteen years ago.

Heh Jeff... I actually agree with you...

I blame it mostly on MLSE. They are short sighted. If they actually spent into the tax level, which should help to make the team better more often then not, they'd win more games and get more fans on the bandwagon driving up ratings and income.

When it comes playoff time, particularly if they make a run at a decent seeding, the coverage is going to be all over the place. People that hate basketball will be on board if they win a series.

I think Doug Smith was talking to Fesschuck in the below quote from his blog this morning.

Quote:
The conversation, almost verbatim:

He: Yeah, but I was ticked off when I got home.

Me: Remember a bad play or something?

He: No, I watched TV.

Me: I know, no Dancing With The Stars re-runs, what a crappy night.

He: Shut up. I watched Sportsnet. We were like the 10th story on the news. Beat the Lakers for goodness sake. The Lakers! We were after the Edmonton Oilers skills competition. The Edmonton-freaking-Oilers skills competition. Do you believe that?

Me: Ah, yeah.
ROGERS SPORTSNET IS THE WORST CHANNEL EVER!

10th fucking story?

You really believe that the interest in the Raptors localy equates to the 10th story when they beat the Lakers?? Come on dude. There is obvious bias in the sports media in this city and yes it bugs the shit out of me. So why do you care that it bothers me? And like i said the internet is a seperate issue all together.

Jeff... Personally, I just don't watch sportsnet. It's a lot easier to not get bothered by something if you completely ignore it.

Jeff's comments are extremely important here.

More general media coverage = more mediocre fans turning into raps = more raps buzz = more ticket/merchandise sale = MLSE makes more and may be willing to spend more

========= ANOTHER ALL-STAR in TO beside Bosh!!!
