The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday that guard Jose Calderon underwent surgery this morning to repair ligament damage and capsular laxity to the ring finger of his left hand. Recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Brent Graham at Toronto Western Hospital .

This past season, Calderon averaged career highs of 12.8 points, 8.9 assists (fourth in the NBA) and 34.3 minutes in 68 games (all starts). He led the NBA in assists-per-turnover ratio (4.21) for a second consecutive season. He also established an NBA single-season free-throw percentage record of .981 (151-for-154).

I thought the capsular laxity was in a joint. There are joints in a finger aren't there?

Neat!

Now that I know that, I am curious why you give little sympathy for a torn Hammy, it is a real bitch to rehab from, especially when you try to play through it.

Why do you never bitch at the Raps Med team?

Patients often either exaggerate their symptoms.. that's why placebo treatments sometimes work on these patients.

Athletes on the other hand will do the opposite.. and downplay their injuries to "tough through it". The docs really have no say in subjective things... like if they ask him "how are you feeling?" and he lies lol. They can only make assumptions based on objective things like x-rays and muscle tests.

Part of it might be the med staffs fault.. but part of it is also the athlete's fault lol.

I agree, however, pro athletes are programmed to play, you have to know that going in.... Other than Vince, I don't know too many that would rather sit than play.

Raptors' Calderon to miss six weeks after finger surgery

Posted Apr 28 2009 12:52PM

TORONTO (AP) -- Raptors guard Jose Calderon has had surgery to repair ligament damage in his left ring finger and will need at least six weeks of recovery.

The team announced the surgery Tuesday.

Calderon dislocated the finger in the first quarter of a home victory March 25 against Milwaukee but did not miss any playing time. He played the remainder of the season with his ring finger and middle finger taped together.

The Spanish star averaged a career-highs 12.8 points and 8.9 assists this season. He was 151-for-154 (.981) at the free throw line, setting a single-season NBA record for accuracy.
