FAN 590's Impression Of the R.O.Y. Race

Interesting take Eric and Jonesy have on the rookie of the year race. Both think that the Top 3 should be Horford, Scola and Moon. No Durant which I'd have to say I agree with. Only problem is, Durant will likely be the winner. Very unfortunate! :(

Well, Jonesy and I bounced around the question/issue for a couple of minutes and we both came to the same conclusion of the top 3 candidates (in no particular order): Luis Scola - HOUSTON, Al Horford - ATLANTA, and Jamario Moon - TORONTO.

To many folks’ surprise, neither one of us had Kevin Durant (SEATTLE) in our top 3. We both had him #4 on our lists. And both Jonesy and I agreed that while Durant is a future star and an unbelievable talent, he has the misfortune of being a rookie during a season in which 3 other first-year players are providing significant contributions to WINNING and/or PLAYOFF teams.

Assuming Atlanta makes the post-season, Horford will be right around the double-double mark for the year. The kid is an absolute stud and a future All Star in my eyes.

Nobody can deny what Scola has done ALL season … let alone in the last month or so … since the absence of Yao Ming.

And say what you will about Jamario Moon, but he’s a 27-year-old rookie who has played through thick and thin since early in the season when Sam Mitchell inserted him into the starting line up in Chicago. While he made his name off thunderous dunks and a brief spotlight in the Slam Dunk competition, he’s known more in Toronto as a guy that doesn’t drive enough; that appears reluctant to put the ball on the floor. Yet he continues to flirt with the top 50 in the NBA in FG% and his rebounding and shot-blocking abilities have been major assets all season.

Compare these three guys to Durant, and there is no comparison. Long-term, Durant will probably be the bigger “star” when stacked-up against Horford, Scola, or Moon. But for this year … Durant’s inflated numbers on a terrible Sonics squad don’t look as impressive as what the other 3 have done in winning environments.

In fact, if you take a look at the “numbers” … Moon, Scola, and Horford have all averaged less minutes-per-game than Durant, but they all have more rebounds-per-game and they all shoot a higher percentage from the field than Durant. The only thing KD has going for him is points-per-game. He has scored at least 10-points-per-game more than any of the three I’ve mentioned. He’s averaging just under 20 PPG - and that’s DAMN impressive for a rook.

But if the vote were to go down today, I’d write my ballot like this: 1. Horford 2. Scola 3. Moon

BTW, here are their current numbers:

AL HORFORD
9.7 points
9.9 rebounds
31:30 minutes
50.0% FG

LUIS SCOLA
9.6 points
5.9 rebounds
23:30 minutes
51.2% FG

JAMARIO MOON
8.5 points
6.4 rebounds
28:18 minutes
47.3% FG

KEVIN DURANT
19.6 points
4.1 rebounds
33:47 minutes
42.1% FG

I would clearly go for scola, but I have to say that Durant is basically by himself in Seatle so IDK.

For many people the difference this year in the Rockets in that winning strike was Scola starting in many games, and he stepped up for Ming too when he was down.

Yep I would go for Scola.

Tommy2Tymes 03-27-2008 12:31 PM

durant hands down, c'mon people. he has no support. he is "the man" on the team. horford can feed off of guys like josh smith, mike bibby, marvin williams. same can be said about scola, with t-mac, alston, and yao. moon isnt even close IMO. i should also mention that Durant has played out of position all year? starting at SG when he is a natural 3/4.

MangoKidHoops 03-27-2008 12:33 PM

If Durant wasn't in the mix, I would give it to Horford. He's putting up fantastic rebounding numbers as a rookie - his numbers will only get better - and doing this all for a team making a push for the playoffs.
I would have said Scola, but Scola is a man. Scola's been playing against quality competition, and other seasoned veterans for years, so I would have expected him to play the way he is.

Durant will win hands down.

When is the last time a glue guy averaging 10 points a game ever won an individual award?

I like Horford the best though.

answer: mike miller in his rookie year

I think Durant would win too. Havne't seen Horford play enough. Moon is solid but not ROY material. Scola same. The fact Durant has improved his shooting as the season has went on and now is playing with no veteran leadership at all speaks volumes. The kid is going to be special. I'm thinking at this point he really does deserve it. That whole good player on winning team thing is never really a factor.

I wouldn't really consider Miller a glue guy. He's a pretty skilled player and that was a really week rookie class.

Ball Don't Lie 03-27-2008 12:57 PM

I wouldnt have given it to him in January, but Durant has really grown up as a player the past 2 months, hes really closing out the season strong even though his team stinks. Hes made major improvements on both sides of the ball, he deserves it. Horford shouldnt be #2 on the list anymore because he isnt even the 3rd biggest contributor on his team and his team sucks anyway. If anything Durants compettition should be Scola because of what hes done and what theyve done since he was inserted into the starting lineup.

Durant=roy

MangoKidHoops 03-27-2008 01:05 PM

Durant will win because people look at PPG more than anything. He's doubled both Horford and Scola in scoring, but his FG AND 3PT percentage leaves something to be desired. Durant has taken twice as many shots as Horford and Scola. He's been given a carte blanche on his team, as opposed to Horford or Scola - that's why he'll win.

pimpery 03-27-2008 01:05 PM

admittedly very biased as i mentioned in another thread Horford's family is literally a 5 min walk from my house and the guy is a classy hard working great player!! GO AL!!! VIVA REPUBLICA DOMINICANO!

And Seattle doesn't suck? Horford is nearly putting up a double-double as a rookie and you're saying that in itself isn't impressive? That's crazy talk, my friend.

Claudius 03-27-2008 01:18 PM

Horford should be ROY.

Yes, his points total isn't flashy, but he's a big kid, very smart basketball player, good FG% AND he's rebounding at an insane rate for a rookie (something that's being overlooked by everyone).

Durrant deserves mention because of his offensive numbers but his FG% is poor and that's not because of guys doubling or tripling him. It's because of his shot selection.

Oh, and I agree with Tommy on this one, Mike Miller is/was a glue guy. Skilled? yes. But he's a guy you want on your team like a Shane Battier, he's not a viable 2nd option imo. He's basically Mo Pete, but with his potential realized.

Krazy Ivan 03-27-2008 02:37 PM

Jamario Moon for ROY... :haha: Are you kidding me???? :confused2:

IMHO... ROY should be, either, Scola or Horford...

Scola has an edge since he is a key piece on a very good team...

rapsfan087 03-27-2008 02:40 PM

Claudius, I really like MoPe ... but putting Mike Miller at the same level than him isn't possible in my books ... maybe Anthony Parker can be near of Mike, but that's all, near. Mike is a best scorer, a best rebounder, can create for him or others, can post up ...

Don't you mean VIVA REPUBLICA DOMINICANA? ;)

Ball Don't Lie 03-27-2008 02:47 PM

Its impressive, and I was ready to hand him the ROY pre allstar break, but since Durant has grown so much over 2 months I cant say that I'd give Horford the award anymore because Durant has been much more impressive. I dont think he should be penalized for playing on a craphole team, hes played better than Horford over the span of the entire year. You also do have to look at their roles on their teams. I think if Durant was on ATL and Horford on SEA this wouldnt even be a discussion because Durant would likely be putting up better shooting %'s and betetr numbers overall whereas Horford would probably be struggling a lot as the #1 guy. Durants just been better this year, I wasnt impressed with him early but Im impressed with him now.
