every raptor is a keeper...?

i've been thinking about this for a while, and i can't remember the last time i felt this way about a toronto team: i am a fan of every raptor this year, and from a basketball perspective - irrespective of contract and age - i would want every one of these guys on my team. they all have a skill, they play team ball and/or are great locker room guys, and every one of them is a useful contributor.

sure, many of them are not in the right role - too much or too little is being asked of most of these guys - but there's not a player on this team i don't enjoy watching.

i don't always have positive things to say about our guys in a throwaway year, but the raps brass has done a great job of getting good pieces. they don't all fit, and there's lots more to add, but there's not a single guy that i'm not a fan of.

Superjudge 03-04-2012 06:57 PM

Oddly, there are only a few I actually like.

dfunkie1 03-04-2012 07:02 PM

there's definitely a lot more players that i like on this team than any other raptor team since the likes of alvin, childs, oak and curry dawned raptor jerseys. although evans didn't really have a place on the floor, i think he would have been a great personality to help this tougher attitude the team plays with.

Everyone's a winner, baby.

I don't know about everybody being a"keeper", but I really do like this team.

This year was about development from the start, and I like what the team's been showing.

Going into this season, (besides the gaping hole at C - which hopefully should be in part on its way to being corrected next year with JV), our two biggest weaknesses were at PG and SF.

I've really liked Jose this year, and am hoping that if we don't trade him away, that we keep him until he expires, and sign him to another contract - but this time at backup type $.

As far as the SF position, I don't know if it's THAT big of a weakness, with the way that James Johnson has played this year. If Bargs, DeRozan and Jose (add JV to the mix) all continue to need shots, I don't mind a defensive SF that focuses on his role. I also really like Kleiza as an offensive option off of the bench and mentor to JV too.

I don't think you turn down any MAJOR upgrade in a trade-deadline move, but I don't mind riding out the stretch with this team as constructed.

What I'd like to see going in to the summer, is Gray re-signed, even Barbosa re-signed (as a spark off of the bench, but to a significantly smaller contract). I'd also like to see the Raps (depending on the draft number too), to try and pull a move that's not seen in basketball that often, but trade down (while picking up assets - perhaps a vet), and then even trade down again - to pick up one of the PGs (even Kabongo). A healthy Bargnani - the way he performed so far this year - plus some upgrades, could put us on the right track going in to next year.

BUTLER.

I hereby disprove your statement. QED. :cookie:

The challenge is going to be moving players that are nice in order to get guys that make the sum of the parts greater than the whole.

After seeing Ed up close tonight, and how he impacts the game to make things easier for the other four guys on the court, I would feel terrible to see him go. Otherwise, as long as there seems to be a plan followed, I could deal with anyone being traded. It' definitely a plus that there is more that can be done than just wait on getting this or that pick. It's a testament to Casey's abilities that there are a good number of players that can be converted to building blocks for a team of the future. Now it's up to BC to put that team together for real so Casey can really show what he can do here.

Right now i like everyone other than Carter, Butler, Forbes.....not that they play but this teams is easy to like this season. They work hard and are generally nice guys.

Don Vito 03-04-2012 10:40 PM

I'm not a fan of Gray, Forbes, and Butler, other than that, meh.

well let's face it, Gray, Magloire, Forbes, Butler, Carter are fillers that likely won't be here next season (with the possible exception of Gray imo, don't know why Forbes is under contract though....that was kind of stupid).

Having seen team chemistry up close a little tonight, I might think there is an element of tightness between Forbes and Demar.

geez dude, I wish there was more Blazer fans that can show this kind of devotion.

MikeToronto 03-04-2012 11:19 PM

Just goes to show you how important this draft is.

Next year, with a draft pick and Jonas and, hopefully, healthy Bargs, this is going to be a playoffs team in the East even if they don't make any moves and don't sign an impact FA.

This summer is our last chance for a while to draft a difference-maker.

Ligeia 03-04-2012 11:24 PM

I think that what is refreshing about this team is that they are generally more professional than we have seen in previous years. There hasn't been any real bickering on the team. They have given a good effort most nights, and I think have been more consistent and much more satisfying to watch than last year or even the year before. On most nights that they lost, I've at least been happy that they were trying.

Colangelo and Casey talked about changing culture last summer, and I think that this is a good start.

1. i have enjoyed watching butler on many occasions this year.
2. tank commander has been an important piece.
3. too much was being asked of him beyond that.
4. i would have no problem if he was our 15th man next year.

I would love to keep DeMar, Amir, Ed, JJ, Kleiza and Bargs for next year.

However for the right price...

Kirby 03-05-2012 12:40 AM

Bayless is ass.

+1

to me this team seems to find a flow at both end of the floor. and Casey does a really good job.
i like this roster too.
don't forget next season we will have JV and barg back - hopefully for most of the season. and that could be a real good factor for us. and maybe a loto pick who can help this team.

This shocks me. And he was being asked to hit open threes. Not only did he not do that, but he also jacked up contested threes for no reason.

I mean, I see the comedic value in having him on the court for 3 seconds to have him lose the game for us, but outside of that...

'trane 03-05-2012 08:13 AM

15th man. who cares?
