Raptors ESPN: Valanciunas MVP of summer league so far

NBA Daily Dime - ESPN

Quote:
Danny Chau,*Hardwood Paroxysm:*Valanciunas. In Lithuania, he resembled a praying mantis on caffeine, a spindly player who got by with aggression and pure effort. It's impossible to ignore how much his physique has improved. He's looked and played the part of a physically imposing player in the NBA. It shouldn't come as a surprise that he's dominated the competition here in Las Vegas.
Quote:
D.J. Foster,*ClipperBlog:*I'm always skeptical when a player supposedly gains "10 pounds of muscle," but Jonas Valanciunas definitely looks bigger and much stronger. His post game has been a nice vehicle for the added size, and you won't find a better screener and roll man in Las Vegas.
Quote:
Ethan Sherwood Strauss, ESPN Insider:*Valanciunas showed up with increased bulk and violent playing style. The once-skinny big man now uses his shoulders to bludgeon, and he seems to have retained, if not enhanced, his quickness. The combo has been too much for these summer league rosters. Look for him to make a run at Most Improved in 2014.

Love the comments ... not sure how accurate the assessment is with respect to enhanced quickness. He hasn't looked quick to me, but I'm confident that will come once he gets used to his new physique.

I think Drummond has dominated more than JV ... he's only 19 years old and he's getting unbelievable rebound numbers. I'm still pissed we didn't take him in the draft.

Drummond and JV combo would of been sick or we could of traded one of them to start our building process. Instead we have Ross who may become a decent starter some where in the future. His upside is quite small.

I like the confidence the added muscle has given him. When he rebounds his elbows are out wide, almost daring the opponent to try and take the ball away from him without running into one of those elbows. He's using his shoulders to clear space under the basket when he's putting up a shot. He'll also get a lot more respect from the ref's this season.

Its amazing how in ONE summer the incremental strength amd bulk Jonas has gained more than the six or seven summers Bargnani has mustered after his rookie season. Its called dedication and work ethic. Something Bargnani does not have. Bargnani will come into camp overweight again, his body will breakdown before the calendar year, and he will miss more games than he has played. Good luck New York!

Ha, I wouldn't be so sure. Something tells me he'll have a pretty good season. Don't know why but I just have a feeling. Call it Raptor syndrome.

What do people think val would have to do to be considered for MIP? There's often an obsession with increase in ppg for that award? val could make decent strides in that area, I just think he'll make small but noticeable increases in multiple categories, be more consistent and be dominated less often. That to me is definitely a mip type season but maybe it won't be obvious/standout in his stats?

Don't you have to be at least in your 3rd season?

Phew, that would be quite some 2nd season!?

i was seeing something like 12/8/1.5, which probably wouldn't make him stand out but raps fans would know coz compared to first season he would be more consistent, dominated far less often, more post moves, less foul trouble, etc. The less obvious things.

Monta Ellis won it in his 2nd.

But in general I suspect a 2nd year player would have to do something spectacular to get votes, or the rest of the candidates be underwhelming.

The final month of the season he averaged 15/6/2.4. So now that he's bigger, should play more minutes and get to the line more (he's a good FT shooter) the only thing he'd have to improve on is RPG. It also will depend on how many touches he see's when player with the starters.

There were some funny games towards the end of the season but must admit I didn't know he avg 15ppg in that month, that's really good. he's got all the tools, small increases in things like mpg and iq (boxing out better,) could easily lead to significantly better rpg and bpg. i'd love him to get some attention next season i'm just being reserved and going on other good Cs and saying he won't quite be a stand out next year.

Besides, i'm saying that's about what it would take for him to be MIP. He won't get it with marginal improvements. In other words 12/7/1.5 won't get him in the discussion imo.

Good for Valanciunas, better to be a leading candidate for MVP than not mentioned at all, even if it's just SL.

I would expect Valanciunas to develop his plays up to Vucevic's level.
Vucevic from last season: 13.1 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 1.9 APG, 1.0 BPG, 0.8 SPG, 51.9% FG

I expect Valanciunas to produce as much as Vucevic from last year.
