Raptors ESPN: Raptors season outlook

2013-14 NBA preview: Toronto Raptors outlook - ESPN

Quote:
Though Valanciunas suffered some growing pains while getting his feet wet in the NBA, the Raptors' starting lineup, featuring the Lithuanian big man next to Johnson, Lowry, DeRozan and Gay, showed some serious promise as a young core. They outscored opponents by 85 points in the 343 minutes they shared on the floor together, easily the most action of any five-man unit on Toronto's lineup card. This is a team that could resemble the Indiana Pacers of the last couple years who have relied on their young starters to carry them throughout the season.

The question is how long they can keep those five players on the floor together. It's concerning that Lowry poses the biggest injury risk of the bunch next season (he's missed an average of 13.5 games in each of his last four seasons) and the Raptors don't have any reliable options behind him. If Lowry goes down, the season can spiral out of control quickly. With that said, SCHOENE sees the Raptors just squeezing their way into the playoffs with a 37-45 record, which signifies a slight improvement from last season. But that projection is contingent on Gay staying with the Raptors for the entirety of next season, which is far from guaranteed with Ujiri at the steering wheel. If the Raptors can find a taker in win-now mode (Milwaukee or Detroit?), Gay's stay in Toronto could be short-lived.The biggest obstacle to the Raptors' .500 quest is their underwhelming defense, which SCHOENE believes will rank 25th next season thanks in part to the exceedingly-high foul rates of Lowry, Johnson and Valanciunas. If Casey can somehow keep that trio out of foul trouble, the Raptors could put together an athletic defensive force that produces a DeRozan-and-Gay dunk factory. That's the best-case scenario, and it might be the most unlikely as well. The Raptors should keep a close eye on Valanciunas, who has been played nonstop in 5-on-5 hoops this summer.

After crushing the competition at the Las Vegas Summer League in July, the 21-year-old big man then starred for the Lithuanian national team at the EuroBasket in September. All the while, Valanciunas looked like he beefed up considerably since last season, which should help him bang against NBA frontlines, but the added weight could make him more susceptible to injury. Valanciunas might be a leading candidate for most improved player next season, but there's a chance he burns out on the way there and the Raptors will have to shut him down. But that might not be such a bad scenario. Raptors fans are ravenous for a playoff appearance after a depressing five-year drought, but this is a team that should be focusing on maximizing wins in 2016-17 rather than 2013-14. With an upcoming 2014 draft class loaded with talented wings, striking out on the postseason might be just what the Raptors need.

JV's play over the summer was very much overstated. He simply did not play that many minutes during Eurobasket. And the lack of depth behind Lowry is also overstated, along with the suggestion that Lowry is injury prone.

Also - this SCHONE shit is not particularly good as far as projecting defense goes, so big grain of salt there.

Im also very concerned about Jonas minutes, I would like the Raptors to pace Valanciunas with 25 minutes a game maybe even less in the first 20 games then maybe step it up to 30 minutes

hes played a ton of basketball, I don't think I've ever seen any raptor play as many games as he has over the last year including summer league then the national team then getign married and then head over to training camp

I hope Casey and Masai do the right thing here, we have to protect him

They did overstate things but they're right - if KL were to be out for an extended period of time, things would get bad real quick. A certain vehicle would start to roll.

13.5 games in each of his last four seasons isn't that bad for a player. I want to see what Klow can do if healthy. If he can't bring it I am sure MU will look for a trade since he is expiring.

25 mpg or less in the first 20 games for JV

someone really wants the tank to roll

but I think everyone wants JV to play 35+mpg this season

Valančiūnas has not played a ton of basketball. Guys that made the playoffs took on a hell of a lot more wear and tear than he did. He didn't get a lot of extended minutes with his national team at all. He got the best of both worlds, staying in good shape and developing without taking on too much strain.

I just hope he gets as many minutes as he can handle.

That's pretty bad. That's 13 or 14 games where we're starting DJ or Buycks, neither of which has really impressed tbh.
