Raptors ESPN: Raps 3rd in most promising rebuild

Quote:
3. Toronto Raptors

Young stud? Maybe | Cap situation? Not yet. | Likely lottery picks? One (Own)

Two words: Jonas Valanciunas. Remember the name, because the center could be the best thing to come out of the 2011 draft -- except he won't make his debut until 2012-13. In Euroleague action last season, he averaged 7.6 points and 5.4 rebounds in 14.9 minutes per game on 71 percent shooting. As an 18-year-old. Translated to 40 minutes per game? 20 points and 15 rebounds. It's not a stretch to say that the Raptors' 5th overall pick, who crushed it in the FIBA Under-19 tournament, is a star in the making.

And it might be best that he doesn't come over just yet. Without him, the Raptors can play out this season and have a shot at another future star in a loaded 2012 draft. The Raptors could have the worst record next season in the NBA, but with Valanciunas in tow and a defensive guru like Dwane Casey at the helm, the Raps could also make the biggest jump in 2012-13. Especially if they land a go-to scorer on the wing. Also, contrary to popular belief, Toronto is not an undesirable destination for free agents. This is a franchise on the rise, though they're not ready to launch. Yet.

It happens more often than YOU think. I just wanted to be sure that it was noticed as much as when a shitty team is talked about negatively.

Sure it does, who would think otherwise.

Toronto is top 5 biggest market in North America! I hope we build a team that can represent well on the hardwood!

People should take note of the comment at the bottom of that little article. It's NOT an undesirable destination. We need to just start winning. It's what brings players in. History has shown that. Exhibit A: San Antonio.

Also, I'm not sold on Harrison Barnes just yet. I still think that we make a bigger play to bring in a guy like Batum to fill out our SF position and let DeRozan be that primary wing player. I wouldn't be surprised if we landed a high pick and traded down to grab a guy like Kendall Marshall (who is just a natural PG).

Re: undesirable location

I think there are aspects of it that are true and aspects that are way overblown. I've always felt a bit better by looking through this lens: if the team is successful, and a player declines to come here just because it's another country or because it's cold, I'm not sure that's really the quality of character you want to lead your team anyway. So forget about them...

I mean, shit, I was as frustrated as anyone when Vince forced his way out, but I think you see now that he is not the type of person you really want to build a franchise around. For all his talent, he's a bit of a loser (on and off the court).

IMO I would go for prospects like Miller Gilchrist Kabongo and hope we hit a homerun.

i think this is the 50th or so time that someone has overhyped kabongo. hes good, good enough to be a lottery (possibly) but he's not the best pick for us just because he's a torontonian. why the fuck does that matter? DeRozan is from compton and love sit here...

He's a good prospect. Possibly the best PG prospect in this draft. The fact that he's a Torontonian is just icing on the cake.

Obviously he's one of the top ones, I'm not debating that...but I'm not sold on his ability, especially for this Raptors team. Actually to be fair, I'm not sold on any of the point guard prospects right now
I'm big on size/speed for point guards. He's a bit on the smaller side, he's quick but is he fast? A few things that deter me from liking Kabongo is his size and I guess athleticism to a certain degree... He's got good quickness, but can he keep up with the Roses, Westbrook etc??

and guys, we've got another 7 months until the draft. Guys like Barnes and Kabongo have plenty of time left to prove themselves.

But in a draft this deep, with so much talent, I think BC is ran out of town if we have a top 3 pick and he trades down.
