Arrow ESPN Radio: The NBA needs to ask itself if it wants to be in Toronto

This is from Eris Smith's blog.

Quote:
So Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic were on “Mike and Mike in the Morning” on ESPN radio earlier today and they had some interesting (although uninformed) comments about the city of Toronto and whether or not this is still a viable market for the NBA.

While both hosts admitted that they love the city overall - and enjoy visiting - they said they don’t believe that any star wants to come here and that Americans don’t want to live in Canada. I’m paraphrasing, but those are the basic nuts and bolts of their statements.

If, as Mike and Mike suggest, the NBA needs to ask itself if it wants to be in Toronto … perhaps the Raptors attendance figures should be researched. Take a look at where this team is in those rankings year after year. Not only are the Raps in the upper HALF almost every year, they’ve frequently been in the top 10 in attendance rankings since they came into the league 15 years ago. And while many local media outlets (in Toronto and Canada) choose to ignore this fact, the Raptors local television rankings are among the best in the entire league. I saw a report last year that had Toronto’s TV ratings behind only the Lakers and Cavaliers local numbers.

While Mike and Mike didn’t bring up this issue … let me just say as well … that the ongoing TAX argument is bogus as well. Let’s just forget about the fact that these players are making American dollars and spending Canadian dollars for 6-8 months of the year — and any accountant worth his weight has found every loophole imaginable to make sure these guys aren’t truly paying any more or less than they should (more or less than anyone else) in spite of living in 2 countries during a 12-month span. Plus, I’ve recently seen documents that suggest Toronto / Ontario / Canada’s taxation is no worse than about 75% of the other markets in the NBA; they’re neck-and-neck with every other city’s taxes outside of Orlando, Miami, San Antonio, Dallas, and San Antonio.

Quote:
As I’ve said 1,000,000 times, post-season success (or lack there of) is the reason that the organization is not top-of-mind for many free agents or ’stars’ around the NBA. Five playoff appearances in 15 years and only 1 second-round berth … THAT’S the issue. And that’s a fact.

We have a core of young and talented players wirt DeRozan, Weems, Davis, Johson and Bargnani who wanna be in Toronto. Give them two or three veterans and they'll get better. We will be a good playoff team in two years with that core. Fuck those wannabe stars.

Fuck Carter and fuck Bosh.
Holla at our young gunz!

Smith is right on this one.

And Mike & Mike are hard to listen to. Hell, much of ESPN Radio is hard to listen to.

He's right though, we just need to win.

It's harder when you get all the unnecessary hate poisoning young guys minds before they even arrive here.

The NBA needs to ask itself if it wants to be in Toronto? The NBA should be thanking their lucky stars they are up here because despite the lack of success, this is a very successful franchise from a financial and fan perspective.

When those lockouts come, it's not because Toronto is losing money.

In my opinon, when you have a guy like Bosh who has MANY MANY guys that are in his range being considered one of the best, that's because you have a massive fan base supporting him. He would be on the level of Carlos Boozer or Zach Randolph without Toronto.

Could you imagine what this team would be like if they started winning?

Can only hold us down for so long!

Fact of the matter is no one wants to play on a losing team. Is anyone jumping to play with the clippers, nets, kings, hornets, grizzlies, timberwolves, warriors etc.. no, because they aren't winning teams. The Raptors have won like 2 playoff games in the last 7 years, who in their right mind would jump to play with this team, I don't care where it is... no one would want to play on a losing team who has seen no success.. that is why those teams above are listed, they are losing teams and no one is jumping to play for them... because they are losing . If toronto starts winning for the first time in the last decade, people would want to play here.

Unless someone can counter with another country the U.S. must be the most xenophobic country in the world!

China maybe? I don't really know much about China but given their general trade stance I could guess they are like that. On the flip side, they have SO many citizens that travel to other countries so I really don't know.

Actually the USA and China are similar in many ways!
USA the Manifest Destiny
China the Middle Kingdom ( basically center of the earth )
Plus many other similarities.
Think the best we can do is smile at our American Cousins pat them on the head and feel sorry for them. Being a small power Canadian's can look at the workd in perspective while the majority of Americans can't.

Hmmm more scathing hate for Toronto eh? Gee, I wonder what they think of the Paper Clips, the Wolves, the Warriors, the Bucks, the Hawks, the Bobcats, the Grizzlies, the Hornets, the Cavaliers (now that Bron is gone let's be honest, it ain't gonna be pretty) and for shits and giggles, the Knicks. All those teams have been poopin the bed for awhile and yet there's never any suggestions about them being foreclosed upon. The American media should shut its gaping hole.

This is dumb. The answer is the nba has asked itself and the answer is yes.

Well imagine we drafted Brandon Roy instead of Bargs?

We would have been a contender with Bosh and Roy.....

This is not revisionist history of what should have happened but what could have. If you think about it, we were very close right then.

Just need to get lucky once.
