Raptors ESPN: Playoffs for the Raptors doesn't seem like a wild expectation

They also touch on the Raptors indirect involvement in the Lin to Houston deal.

Quote:
No team outside of the two directly involved in the signing and the declining of Lin's $25 million offer sheet has benefited more than Toronto. With the Knicks allegedly looking to avoid the new CBA's more punitive luxury tax, the Raptors were able to pick up Fields, in part because they offered him a very generous sum (three years, $20 million) in the presumed hopes of gunking up New York's attempt to woo Steve Nash. And Lowry, whose displeasure with playing for Kevin McHale had been well-documented, was able to get the Rockets to trade him to Toronto, effectively paving the way for the Lin signing.

Add in incoming rookies Terrence Ross, the No. 8 pick in this year's draft who has impressed here in Vegas, and Jonas Valanciunas, the No. 5 pick in the 2011 draft who is expected to finally come aboard, as well as another year under the tutelage of defensive guru Dwane Casey, and all of a sudden, a playoff berth doesn't seem like such a wild expectation for the much-maligned Raps.

I thought that I'd already read that Ross didn't play very well in Vegas...at least that he shot very poorly.

Yeah his shooting percentages weren't great, but he still scored around 15 a game, and his stroke looked really good. The shots just weren't falling. Plus when coach Casey was interview he was really impresses by his ability to read the defenses to get to the best possible spots on the floor. He said most guards don't have that basketball IQ their rookie year.

Ive gotta admit we have a good young bunch of players, but 1 or 2 or more have to become stars or solid contributers to get this team over the hump.

There is a real good chance that we can get the 8 or 7 seed this year IMO but a lot has to go right.

Definitely everything needs to go well in the season, but we will see! I'm pumped and the seasons so far away still. Usual summer.

We should have a higher winning percentage. I think the odds will be against making the playoffs

Seeing the jump in toughness and defense that Casey was able to with a team without Bargnani for a majority of the season, it will be very interesting to see what he can do with this current roster if healthy. Playoffs is not out of the question this season, especially if we see teams like Orlando and Atlanta drop out of playoff contention while we are better than teams like Cleveland, Milwaukee etc.

Top 5 of the conference (in no particular order)
Miami
Brooklyn
Indiana
Boston
NYK

Teams likely fighting for positions 6, 7, 8
Philadelphia
Toronto
Washington
Milwaukee
Chicago
Atlanta (possibly)

Guaranteed Lottery teams
Orlando (if Howard is dealt)
Detroit
Charlotte
Cleveland

When you look at the teams outside the top 5 it's wide open. As long as we stay healthy and especially if we make a significant addition sometime leading up to the deadline we should be in the mix. I think Chicago will probably in the 5-6 mix though.

I doubt Chicago will drop down to 6th, even if Rose is unhealthy. 7th-8th seeds really are up for grabs especially if Philly struggles like it did at the rear end last season.

Edit: never mind philly lost Lou Williams and Brand.

washington lineup is under the radar they could be much better than what we think especially with adding bradley beal

milwaukee might take that step way down the ladder this year and fall into top 5 draft pick

chicago is a lock there coached way to well

atlanta is done, there a josh smith meltdown away from losing there minds, looks like the owners want a rebuild

the cavs has a good chance of landing hte no 1 pick this year, they've blown there last two draft picks, i would have went with barnes this year and jonas last year over waiters and thompson not to hate those guys but they left better players on the board

detroit is sneaky they had a pretty good last half of the season

philly? they didn't look great during the half of the season but they still made the second round of the playoffs, but they did push the celtics and kind of choked it away in the end of that series

orlando even with howard there still going to be bad just because howard is going to miss a ton of game at the beginning of the season and by then he might already be traded

i do like the groupings but chicago should be in the first tier even though they should pull a popovich and tank this year to get rose some help

It'd be nice if ESPN played some frickin' Raptors games.
The world needs to know.

I think the Cavs can surprise people this year, they had a ton of injuries last year and their roster looks better than before

Irving
Waiters
Gee
Thompson
Varejao/Zeller

I see one very good PG, rookie SG, below average SF, 2nd year PF, and a solid center.

Not sure that gets them in the playoffs next year in a improved East. Also got hope Irving is healthy all season long but in the past two years he has now had 3 different injuries.

Now if they get Bynum? Yes, they're a playoff team.

Remembered reading somewhere about how he felt he needed to work on his conditioning recently and how fighting through fatigue effected his jumpshot probably why he shot poorly.
