Default ESPN Panel: Rudy Gay most overrated small forward

Who's the most overrated small forward in the NBA?

Cavan: Rudy Gay. Few players personify the stats-eye test divide better than the supremely talented -- and supremely flawed -- Raptors wing. Where proponents point to Gay's bucket-harvesting prowess and smooth flow, detractors, well, point to the numbers. The good news: after corrective surgery, Gay should actually be able to, like, see the basket. Which is important when you're shooting a basketball.

Haberstroh: I'll go with Rudy Gay, one of the last remaining idols of Points Per Game worshipers. Gay has all the tools to be an All-Star and he's paid like one -- did you know he'll make more than Durant this season? -- but his only above-average skill is shot-taking. Though he may be more overpaid than overrated, he's not the franchise player that many believe he is.

Poulard: Rudy Gay. He will make roughly $17.9 million in 2013-14 and yet does not possess a single elite skill. He can create good shots but one expects a better conversion rate from the Toronto Raptor. His salary technically puts him close to the same level as Carmelo Anthony. But his production? Not so much.

Wade: Rudy Gay. Critics spurned the Memphis Grizzlies for punting on the season last year when they traded away their ballyhooed wing in favor of fiscal prudence. Then the team advanced further than it ever had in franchise history. Despite getting swept by the Spurs, this is damning evidence that Gay was merely an ancillary ingredient in the team's success.

Young: Rudy Gay. In today's NBA, small forward has become a position of production, and not just in raw scoring stats, but efficient, well-rounded production. Gay can score, but it's in a volume manner. He's a good player, no doubt, but is there one thing he's really great at?

To be honest he seems like another Carmelo Anthony to me. He can shoot you in or out of games.

To be fair, some Raptor fans were even calling him overrated the day of the trade. I was one of them. I still think he is a bit overrated, and badly overpaid, especially in next year's option year if he takes it. He's a player that tends to illicit some extreme opinions from people. I think it might be different if he was making $10-12 million a year, which is closer to the portion of the cap you can justify allocating.

And I'm not even a guy who wants to tank and trade him for expirings, yet I think he's overrated. I think he's a respectable, above average starter, who might even be top 10 at his position, but some of the shit Raptor fans said about him last summer when we had threads about which SF to pursue....just mind boggling. Someone compared him to Scottie Pippen for fuck's sake! Those kinds of comments can cause people to respond back the other way with most overrated. I've heard American announcers slobber on his balls, now some are not.

He is not overrated, he is overpaid though. He is a good shooter and a great rebounder for his position. He is a difference maker.

The only thing that makes him overrated is his paycheck. IMO he's a top 10 SF in this league and saying that isn't overrating him. He does several things well, but nobody should be saying he's an elite player. He's a 2nd tier star.

Some people talk about him like he's better than top 10, though. That's the point.

Man, everyone goes at his contract... NO ONE BREATHING believes that he's worth the max. He's not overrated.
"but is there one thing he's really great at?"
No, he's not great. If he was really 'great' on one thing while he was/is so 'good' in everything then he'd be worth the max. He's a good scorer, when he's not blind, he's a good defender, good rebounder, and he makes everyone around him better. Sorry if he's not scoring 25-30 like a max player, but he's not a max player. And NO ONE thinks he is one.

"Then the team advanced further than it ever had in franchise history. Despite getting swept by the Spurs, this is damning evidence that Gay was merely an ancillary ingredient in the team's success."
Yup got nothing to do with every team they went up against had key major players injured. Nothing to do with that whatsoever! #RudyIsUseless
All it takes is an actual coach(Yes a shot at LAC and OKC's coaches) who realizes that Memphis can't shoot for shit and it's practically bigs dominating or bust, would finally double the bigs.

nd "THEY WENT PAST FIRST ROUND TWICE WITHOUT HIM" Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Rudy Gay's fault that Mayo was 1-11, Conley was 2-13, Zach was 2-13 in game 7. Thankkk god they got rid of the cancer that is Rudy Gay who had 19 and 11 on 47% FG.

Fuck ESPN.

TBH beyond Lebron, Durant, Melo the drop off is huge and debatable as to which players are slotted where. Saying he might be top 5 or close to it isn't that far fetched. What's funny to me is that half the fanbase wants him traded. lol

I mean yea some people overate him I think :s I recall a 'possible 2nd best SF with the right coach' or something. But other than that... people know he's practically a possible 20-22, (Depending on FGA, I guess) ppg on our team, with 6 rebounds 3 assists, around 1.5-2 steals, around a block.

I agree with Tommy and Jeff.

There's no way he's over rated. No doubt he's overpaid.

This made me laugh.

That is just idiot reasoning. When you get swept there is no way you call the subtraction of an all-star Small Forward an ancillary ingredient.

People complaining about Raptors signing Bosh would be overpaying him. Is three straight seasons of 20-30 wins worth an extra 4-6 million per year. Acquiring all-star talent in their prime is hard (Mavericks), some times you have to pay a premium to get that player. Looking back at the last three years, I feel this roster has the best chance to make the playoffs. Look how the team played inspired ball when Rudy Gay initially joined the Raps by beating such teams as the Clippers, Indiana, Denver, and New York twice. The team finished 21-20 the last 41 games. Rudy Gay is the closer for the team, and he instills confidence for his teammates.

He's not an all-star SF. This is exactly why he's overrated. People shouldn't be calling him that.

But, I also don't like that guy's example, although for different reasons. OKC lost Westbrook. That played a big part in Memphis advancing past the Thunder.

Rudy's better than gallo, batum and parsons off of clutch factor alone, funny how no one notices how much rudy steps his game up against lebron, melo,KD
if he played like that consistently he would be a top 5 sf

Well he's tech not an all-star, but people say that since players like Igudola, and Granger have been... and he's pretty much in the same level as those guys. So he can be one, but somebody's gotta get injured

George is a far superior passer with as good defense. And stats don't capture the gap in the court vision/awareness. Watching Rudy run the PnR in Memphis was painful at times, especially in the playoffs against the Clippers 2 years ago. George is great at finding his bigs.

Deng is a better all around player.

I'd take Iggy for his defense and passing, which are all-nba quality.

Then, I agree, it does start to get blurry. That's why I'd put him somewhere in the top 10.

Yeah OKC > Memphis for sure. With or without Rudy.

He may not be one on a consistent basis, but like Ataf said, Granger, Iggy etc. have been, and he's in a higher category than those two imo.
