Raptors ESPN: Lowry the biggest snub for All-star reserves

Quote:
Tom Haberstroh, ESPN.com: Kyle Lowry. That's easy. We complain that the fan vote is a popularity contest. Well, it appears the coach vote is one as well. That's the only explanation I can come up with for putting Joe Johnson in the game over the prickly Kyle Lowry, who has my vote for best point guard in the East.

Kevin Pelton, ESPN Insider: Kyle Lowry. The term "snub" is in danger of losing all meaning from overuse, but it might be appropriate with Lowry. The Raptors guard ranks third in the East in WARP (8.7), ahead of everyone who was chosen as a reserve. And with Toronto atop the Atlantic, team performance doesn't explain his omission.

Ethan Sherwood Strauss, ESPN.com: Kyle Lowry, who likely missed the cut because he plays in Canada and he's notoriously salty. Setting aside how that description makes Lowry sound like poutine, the Raptors point guard clearly deserved to go based on merit. He's first among East point guards in player efficiency rating and, unlike so many other point men, he defends doggedly.

Justin Verrier, ESPN.com: Kyle Lowry. DeMar DeRozan is actually the better player for this format, but Lowry is the more deserving player based on regular-season performance. He's sixth in PER at his position in a golden age for point guards, and his bulldoggedness is the driving force of this Toronto turnaround. But, hey, all those defensive centers will be fun in a shooting contest.

Michael Wallace, ESPN.com: Al Jefferson. He's the most productive center in the East and has Charlotte in the playoff mix in his first season with the Bobcats. I certainly have no problem with Joakim Noah making the team, but Jefferson is the only thing Charlotte has going well on most nights.

Quote:
EASTERN CONFERENCE

Marc Stein: 1. Kyle Lowry, Toronto Raptors
Two Raptors on the All-Star team when there were projected to be none when the season began? East coaches apparently couldn't buy into that radical concept, which means Lowry -- arguably the East's best point guard so far this season -- is a spectator. He really should have gotten Joe Johnson's backcourt spot -- my Toronto-loving Grantland colleague Zach Lowe is especially bummed about this -- but the coaches apparently weren't ready to live in a world where the Raps are suddenly awash in starry names.

2. Who is the biggest All-Star snub in the West?

Larry Coon, ESPN.com: Again I have a top three: Pau Gasol, Kyle Lowry and Paul Millsap. I think Lowry deserved it the most.

Of course he got snubbed, when only LeBron,Love,George and Durant (all All Stars) are more valuable to their team(based on win shares) and Lowry didn't make it,then he got robbed. He's a top 10 two way player in the league at the moment, undoubtedly!

I agree with everything you guys have said tonight, of course. I'm glad some analytics and well-regarded guys made it clear how snubbed Kyle was. I think it would be really professional of Joe Johnson to sit out, especially since if he gets injured that team is falling out of the playoffs fast.

Kyle's head is in the right place. We put a little bit too much emphasis on the All Star game. The only thing that pisses me off is that such honors should go to guys like him that have their heads in the right place.

In any case, i come out of this loving him that much more, and hoping like hell he makes all NBA. Offense and Defense.

Zach Lowe:

Joe Johnson over Kyle Lowry is a complete joke.

I hadn't thought of it before, but if he keeps up his play for the rest of the season and the Raps hold onto that 3 spot... You have to think he has a chance at All-NBA, don't you?

most everyone here knows how i feel about All-Star games...they're a joke

that said, i'm glad Klow is not going..i'd much rather see him rest on a beach for a few days and get re-energized for the 2nd half of the season
and ya, i wish the same was happening with DD and V

edit - forgot about TR

i think they will invite him to the skill contest or the 3pt shotting contest for good mesure !

but we have 3 guys during the week end, with JV on the rising star, Ross at the dunk contest, and DD in the all star game !

Change the format, fan-voting simply is not working.
JJ over Lowry is insulting. I swear to God, if I was Demar, I wouldn't even play. I'd stay my ass at home with Lowry, if they don't want two deserving Raptors and limit us to one, then they can fuck right off.

reserves aren't fan voted. on that front this makes even less sense.

No, change the format of the entire selection process. I know that the starters are fan-voted. That's how we ended up with gems like injured-Kobe and Kyrie over more deserving players.

I feel that strongly, that if I were Demar, my jersey would "Lowry". I wouldn't be able to just take it lying down. It's a complete rip-off.

fan voting for anything in the nba is stupid, voting for the all-star starters or voting the winner of the dunk contest
i think maybe what they can do if they really want to have fan voting is that instead the coaches pick all the players for each team and then maybe the fans vote for the starters out of the rosters that have already been selected, that way the errors in the rosters themselves are minimized and chances are 80% of the players the fans would have voted in as starters are going to be on there anyways

If he doesn't make the all-defensive 1st team it'll be another robbery.

There isn't PG in the league who plays better D on a nightly basis. Couple that with the fact that he's relied upon to facilitate a lot of the offense too and it's doubly impressive.

lmao there's some clown arguing with Zach Lowe on twitter saying Lance deserved the spot more because of his higher raw fg%, rbs and ast, and triple double count.
