ESPN Insider: Top five sell-high candidates

Jose Calderon, Toronto Raptors
Calderon

Calderon is moderately overpaid but nevertheless is enjoying a sterling season in his first campaign under coach Dwane Casey. That said, Calderon is nearing 31 years of age and is not going to be a part of the next good Raptors team. He has just one more year left on his contract after this season. On one hand, you can look ahead and decide that Calderon's expiring deal will have more value next year at this time. However, do you really want to chance a drop in his production next season?

It's essential that the Toronto brain trust of Bryan Colangelo and Ed Stefanski do an accurate survey of the landscape. There are at least two quasi-contenders -- the Lakers and Magic -- desperate for help at the point guard position. It might take a three- or four-team scenario to deliver the future-friendly assets that Toronto covets, but that's the route the Raptors should be taking.

There is a lot we (regular fans) don't know about the situation, the most significant unknown being Jose's health - which I assume BC & Co. have a better understanding of. To me, that's the key for him going into the future. His skill set will not be affected by age as much as it would have been had Jose been a more explosive player, so the key to his success over the next 5/6 years is his health. It's a tough choice, but I think it does make more sense to trade him now, if the right deal comes along. The thought of Bayless starting/playing more than 15 minutes per game makes me want to vomit, so in any deal, we want to be sure we are getting a quality PG back, or have scouted the PGs in the draft well enough to be confident in their abilities.

^This echoes what's been said by some here including myself. I have a feeling though that it won't happen by March 15.

Future friendly assets please

the logic of the last sentences escape me
while it's fairly obvious that the lakers and the magic are the primary targets, and that they have no assets we are really interested in, how exactly are they supposed to get those assets in a three team trade? Both teams are in an identical situation, a few players they wouldn't trade for jose, and a whole bunch of players nobody would want. Sure, the Lakers could trade Gasol for young assets to flip them to us for Jose, but that's an unrealistic scenario.

We could go after Dwight as an expiring and try to get a pick in there as well. Other players would have to be involved of course, and who knows if they want Jose if Dwight is leaving? Or we could be part of something where Dwight goes somewhere else.

If we do get dwight, and only as an expiring, i'd bench him. But you know that's not possible so it's not a good move on our part, we'd lose out on our relatively good pick this year, all for a rental and getting rid of jose's contract. pass

the magic would have to be pretty stupid to take jose for dwight when they are flooded with offers from all over the league. They could easily have Gasol or Brook Lopez and probably Noah as well.

Let's face it, if we trade Jose, we'll have to settle for a late pick, although the way the lakers are playing, it may end up as a lottery pick eventually :)

Do you see the Raptors making any moves towards the deadline? What is the market like for players such as Barbosa and Calderon?
John Hollinger (2:06 PM)

There isn't much of one, which is what makes moving them problematic. Raptors don't want to just dump Calderon, but those are the type of offers out there. I think they'll have some conversations but end up standing pat.
Hollinger has pretty good sources usually and it's what you would expect anyway. Personally, I would trade him to the Lakers for their pick if that's on the table and a deal could be constructed. Otherwise I'd keep him, Orlando's pick won't be high enough and we can always use Jose as part of a trade this summer.

LAL-HOU Deal still working?? Gasol for Scola, Dragic, Martin, NY 1st Pick?
John Hollinger (2:09 PM)

I'm not privy to any of these conversations, but a deal where the Lakers trade Pau for a chunk of Houston's depth makes all kinds of sense in both directions.
maybe LA could flip that NY pick along with their own for Jose. Jose + kobe + scola + bynum and martin and dragic off the bench would be a clear ugprade over their current roster.

Hollinger is full of shit here imo. He's saying there's not market for them and we aren't being offered anything and we don't want to just dump him for nothing. When we've heard nothing but the opposite and that the Raps don't want to take back salary in any deal involving either player.

It's all about return. If they can somehow flip Calderon for a fairly decent first round draft pick and hopefully a serviceable upgrade on the roster then you can make that deal. I just worry that what you end up with at the PG position will be one of these newer, young, and monumentally stupid PG's that simply cannot lead a team. A lot of um can score, some can dunk, some make really fancy passes.... but really, unless you are absolutely loaded with MVP/ Allstar talent in other positions, you need a guy that plays the old school way. It will be a tough one to suck up, but what can ya do.

"what the fuck ya gonna do?"

jeffb 03-09-2012 11:01 AM

What has Jose led us to?

Superjudge 03-09-2012 11:55 AM

I ain't biting Chief Brody.

I agree we could do far worse than Jose, the guy is creating for everybody. There is no way i want to give him away for another chucker PG

um, what exactly did you hear? All I heard was that there's a lot of interest in Jose, I've yet to hear a single specific hint of an offer. I'm sure every team in the league would be willing to trade their troy murphies for our Jose.
