Raptors ESPN: Ed Davis, good player in a bad situation

From ESPN Inside: Tom Haberstroh

Quote:
Quick, someone rescue Davis before something bad happens. With players-only meetings and injuries to Andrea Bargnani (elbow) and Kyle Lowry (triceps) plaguing the Raptors, the Toronto squad appears to be a sinking ship -- and 23-year-old Davis doesn't deserve to go down with it. The organization should be building around this kid rather than burying him behind Bargnani's bricklaying campaign.

Now that Bargnani is missing some time with his elbow issue, maybe Toronto will show a least a little more confidence in Davis. Despite playing less than 20 minutes per game so far this season, he's averaging 14.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per 36 minutes (which are Varejao-type numbers). Although Davis might not erupt for 24 points and 12 boards every night the way he did on Wednesday against the Nets, he has showed that he's not just a limited scorer around the rim. Will he continue to shine when Bargnani gets back? If not, let him blossom elsewhere.

If we decide to stick with Bargs (dear god no), at least his trade value is increasing

What, we can't have two PF's?

Well, he may not enjoy backing up Bargs especially seeing as how the team is playing much better without him, he may start feeling he is better than Bargnani.

I've been saying it for a while, Davis is the future at PF.

It was good when Bargnani was coming off the bench his rookie season, if Bargnani cant get traded that is the best scenario and have Ed start instead. Its a shame that he barely gets his mins, and he has shown he can produce when given the minutes since his rookie season.

What was the rumor about Davis not wanting to play here when he was drafted? I never really followed it through but it's been in the back of my mind, especially recently.

I'm liking Ed's hustle of defense and rebounding - the guy goes up hard for every board. But offensively he's limited to little more than lay-ups and dunks. He can hit jumpers within 12 - 14 feet, but for all of Jack and Matt's talk about an improved jumper, I don't see that as a reliable weapon in his offensive arsenal, at least yet.

If he plays a consistent 30min he'd give us 12/10/2, i would take that in a heartbeat with his energy and defense over Bargnani's lack of effort.

Definitely, and I think Ed's jumper will improve - today he hit a few from around 10 - 15 feet. At this point, maybe trading Bargs for literally nothing at all will benefit the team...

It was a bs rumor made, based on his expression getting drafted. It was dumb... and not worth to keep note off honestly...

Whether he wants to play here or not is not known.

Food for thought

When Lowry went down early in the season, our lineup with Jose starting was:

Calderon
Derozan
Kleiza
Bargnani
Valanciunas

^^ We continued to struggle with this lineup, especially on defense.

This time around, with Bargs also out the starters are:

Calderon
Derozan
Pietrus
Davis
Valanciunas

^^ This lineup is winning games. Pietrus is slightly better than Kleiza but the main difference imo other than Jose's play right now is Ed Davis playing 30mpg. He's been a huge difference, especially on D. Our interior defense is now far better.
