Default ESPN: Douby Makes Summer League Halfway Home Honors Team

Quote:
All Vets & Journeymen Team

* Quincy Douby (TOR): Douby has been working hard on his game, and his effort is paying off in Las Vegas. He's shooting the ball efficiently from distance, racking up assists, and keeping turnovers to a minimum. Toronto may not have room for him in their backcourt, but his 19 points per game on 61.1 percent shooting should catch someone's attention.

Good for Douby. He's not that horrible of a player, a good three-point shooter, and apparently has been working to get better. I don't think he will get much PT here, but a team in need of a back-up should give him a look.

That's good. It won't be too difficult to trade him now.

It's still just the summer league though. Hopefully we'll find takers for both Douby and Banks. With Jose starting, Jack possibly being the back up and Roko as a reserve, we're suddenly loaded at the point guard position. We'll see what Superman BC can do.

Its too bad this doesn't really mean much. It'd be nice for BC to have the leverage of insisting that a team take Banks' contract if the really want Douby. But I doubt those in the know put much stock in a somewhat veteran player spanking the kids in summer league.

However, it's still better that he's working hard and showing something rather than simply sucking.

Having too many combo guards is a great problem to have.

That's not happening. Douby makes dick. Banks is making over $4M/yr and he's useless.

Don't rule out Roko getting moved.

Default Douby's 2nd Chance

Quote:
Originally drafted by the Sacramento Kings (19th, 2006), guard Quincy Douby struggled to find his role in the rotation. Eventually he was waived by Sacramento, joining with the Erie BayHawks of the NBADL.

Before long, the Toronto Raptors
gave Quincy a pair of 10-day contracts. When they expired, the Raptors not only signed him for the rest of the year but for the coming 2009/10 season as well.

While he only played in seven games, Douby shot an impressive 54.5% from the field and 44.4% from three.

This week he's playing in Las Vegas with Toronto's summer squad.

"I'm having a lot of fun out here," said Douby. "This is my third summer league and I'm just going out here trying to show that I can play and that I belong in this league."

At 6'3", Douby is an undersized shooting guard. His time in Sacramento was somewhat futile as Coaches Reggie Theus and Kenny Natt looked to Quincy for play-making.

"It was definitely hard having three coaches in three years," said Quincy. "It was hard for me to adjust 'cause every year a new coach would come with a new system and a whole new idea."

The Raptors have a better understanding of Douby's skill set.

"They definitely know I'm a pure scorer. I can shoot the ball. They also want me to also focus on distributing the ball, playing pressure defensive - focusing on that stuff," said Quincy. "But also keep on working on my scoring ability and scooting, have the whole package."

With Jose Calderon and presumably Jarrett Jack (should the Indiana Pacers pass on their restricted free agent), Douby may finally have the opportunity to play to his strength as an undersized two-guard.

Of course Jack could keep Quincy on the bench or worse, so the pressure is on for Douby to perform.

"I think us competing in practice, that's going to get us all better. The NBA has a lot of great players and on your team, there's going to be a lot of great players to compete against to get playing time," said Douby. "I think it's going to be a good situation for the whole team. I'm looking forward to it. When practice comes I'm going to just play as hard as I could."

The Raptors have made a few key changes this offseason, most notably the Shawn Marion/Hedo Turkoglu trade.

"I was kind of surprised. Shawn, he's a big help on the team. He's the reason why we won a lot of those games. He's real versatile, real fast, athletic - grab boards, assists, score," continued Douby. "The front office thought it was a better idea to bring Turkoglu along - and I think Turkoglu is a great player making it to the championship game - being a big help to the [Orlando Magic]. I think he's going to bring that us and it's going to be a lot of fun."

General Manager Bryan Colangelo has been proactive this summer in improving the Raptors who finished the season 33-49. In addition to the Turkoglu deal, Colangelo traded for forward Reggie Evans, Antoine Wright and Devean George. He also drafted guard DeMar DeRozan (9th) and has the pending offer sheet out to Jack. The team is also rumored to be close to a deal with former Raptor Carlos Delfino.

The goal is to quickly become a contender in the Eastern Conference before star Chris Bosh becomes a free agent next summer.

Douby isn't sure what's to come of Bosh and the Raptors.

"I don't know. I know he likes it out in Toronto but that's his decision. This is a business and you've got to go where you feel you'll have the most fun or you'll get the most money. It's up to him at the end of the day," said Douby. "I definitely like Chris Bosh and think that he's a great player but at the end of the day it's his decision and whatever decision he makes is going to be best for him and his situation."

In the meantime, Quincy hopes to make an impression on the Raptors this summer in Las Vegas. Through three games he's averaging 19 points on 53.8% shooting from the field.

With the Raptors, he's confident in the coaching staff and hope to make the best of his second chance.

"In Toronto, they're consistent," said Douby. "The coaches are doing a great job staying on top of me, staying on top of everyone on the team to get better and get focused for next season."

The Raptors next play the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday at 5:00pm Pacific.

Despite the opinions here, I like him.

I think he's got a shot at being a nice bench player in the league.

A more consistent Juan Dixon if you will.

He's too small.

I think Juan Dixon would be a fair comparison. I think he can get there too if he's given a chance. His best situation would be to get dealt to a team like Memphis, who is weak at the point. He could play combo guard in a place like that and actually get to play a few minutes. The more I think about it the more I hope they keep him. He's worth pennies and to have him in case of emergency instead of some undrafted rookie seems like a better situation to me.

And what happens if one gets injured? Calderon?

Do we like having only Jack and Roko left?

Jack is capable, but Roko as the only supporting role is not enough, not yet.

Douby is an excellent fourth option PG/SG on any team.

Douby staying on our team is as good or better as an insurance policy than any team can afford.

no he isn't.

He'll be at home, doing dick all if he isn't signed, and if you need him, a cheap little 10 day will do the trick.

And having Douby behind Jack makes you feel more assured? I'm not saying it's a bad thing to have more back up but there are only so many decent point guards in the league.

If Jose is out, we'll have to give Roko minutes, regardless of the presence of Douby, this is the the ONLY way Roko develops. We can sign 5 point guards but at the end of the day only 2-3 of them get minutes (and our other positions are compromised). No team is complete, even teams like Lakers (Farmar) and Cavs (Gibson) have not so outstanding players as their primary backups. We can come up with a thousand what ifs but injuries are part of the game. A balanced team is a good team and I'm sure BC will have a solid rotation ready before the season.

More good news after game three:

The game featured 22 lead changes and 12 ties with the last coming at 66-66 with 9:38 remaining in the fourth quarter. Toronto put some daylight between itself and Portland when Quincy Douby nailed a three pointer. Douby had a team-high 20 in the tilt.

... and what if Bosh gets injured. and then bargs. and then hedo. and then everyone else. do we like having to call up D League players to fill out our whole team!!!

its pointless to speculate about injuries to this extent... it looks like we've secured a back-up for jose. thats about as deep as any team has at pg
