Raptors ESPN Debates Bargnani vs Roy

Quote:
3. Who should be ranked higher: Andrea Bargnani or Brandon Roy?
Note: Bargnani was selected No. 1. overall in the 2006 draft; Roy was picked sixth.

J.A. Adande, ESPN.com: As wobbly as Roy's knees are, he showed he still has something left with that 18-point fourth quarter in Game 4 of the Dallas series. That's as many points as Bargnani has ever scored in a playoff game. Give me a guy who can take over in the postseason.

Jovan Buha, ClipperBlog: Bargnani. If this were any other time over the past few years, it'd be Roy by a landslide. But with his body failing him, he's now an inconsistent role player at best. For all his faults, Bargnani can put a ton of points up, and thus has slightly more value.

Danny Savitzky, Nets Are Scorching: Roy. It's not fair to just assume further degeneration of his knees and game alike, and Roy showed against the Mavericks that he can still take over a game. It's reasonable to expect he's put his time in this offseason trying to reshape his game to cope with his lost athleticism.

Kyle Weidie, Truth About It: Bargnani. In a contest of Roy's knee versus Bargnani's heart, you gotta go with the one you don't have to stand on. Sure, Andrea will never be more than a complementary piece, and Roy possesses the soul that makes champions; but go ask the actuary who he'd rank higher.

Royce Young, Daily Thunder: Bargnani. It's simple: He has two fully functional knees. Which is pretty important when it comes to playing basketball.

Says everything. Roy is not going to be that top 10 guy again.

Andrea was going be the ROY but he had to miss the remainder of the season during for an appendix surgery or something like that, so the award went to Roy.

I remember Bargs going off in a couple Nets games in his rookie season in the playoffs...pretty sure he scored more then 18 in a game.

ouch!

it's a good debate. Bargs scoring is consistently underrated/ignored, glad he at least got some positive comments in this one. I really like Roy, hope he can get fit.

Newly improved PF barg (with casey defence molded in,) v fairly fit 30mpg Roy?

Nice quote.

It's a no contest at this point though. Yes, Roy can unexpectedly take over one random playoff game, but so can JJ Barea.
Roy is a subpar, marginal starter at a position that's not very deep in the league. Not only because his knees are bad but also because he couldn't adjust to his new role mentally so far.
If Roy rebuilds his game and mind for a Grant Hill type of role, we can maybe revisit it then. Now, it's easily Bargs.

Roy was passed over by teams because of suspect knees. Their concerns were well founded, so Bargnani wins, but is still not showing as best in the draft.

Not sure why Rudy Gay is never mentioned in this debate. He would've looked nice beside Bosh.

He went 8th.... at some point you have to concede he wasn't really in the running for top pick...... though Adam Morrison was for a bit.

Gay was talked about having the most potential in the draft though, but they always say things like that about athletic wings.... look at DeRozan case in point.

It's funny, cause even up to halfway through this season, many on here were suggesting LMA wasn't even close to Bosh... I'd suggest the draft redone would go LMA, Gay, Rondo, Millsap, Bargnani.
