ESPN Buyer's Guide: Amir Johnson

Amir Johnson
He's 23 years old and had a better player efficiency rating than All-Star Chris Kaman this past season. He had the best pick-and-roll numbers of any NBA player not named Dwight Howard. He was one of four players to average a steal and 1.5 blocks per 36 minutes. He's a former McDonald's All-American and cleaned up the glass better than Andrew Bynum and Kevin Garnett. And yet, despite the accolades, most people have never heard of him.

At 6-foot-9, Johnson played backup to Chris Bosh in Toronto and did the dirty work for the 40-win squad this past season. Offensively, he's a putback machine and understands his low ceiling as a scorer. He's the team-first warrior whom every playoff team needs. Stick him in a Glen Davis-type role for a contending team, and everyone will know his name.

Yes as a free agent Amir is ranked very low which is a plus for the Raptors a max 3 year deal in 4 to 5 million average. I think he can be a starter if he keeps his fouls under control which he began to do last year. Plus being a starter he would get more favorable calls.

Cleaning up the glass better than KG or Bynum was a pretty low ceiling this season.

we need to sabotage his worth so we can keep him and keep him cheap.

dude was lazier than hedo and rebounds worse than bargs. i think he needs another stint down in the d-league.

I don't know what games you've been watching but johnson was one player on the Raptors who gave 100% every night and you could clearly see it (and there wasn't many Raptors you can say that about). and in my opinion is a good to great rebounder especially offensive boards

If I remember correctly in the Raptor Boston meetings Kg punked out Bosh.
Bynum is one of the better centers in the league if he stays healthy.
He will be signed quickly by BC while others look at Bosh, Amare, Boozer, Lee.

So true. Get him 15-20 minutes on a contending team and see how valuable he is. Amir is a winning player. He learned well from the Wallaces

You don't have to worry about Amir's contract. This is what happens during free agency. The top free agents (Lebron, Wade, Bosh) will be get their max contracts. The second tier free agents like Amare, Dirk, Joe Johnson will be pushing for max contracts. Then players like Boozer, Rudy Gay, Paul Pierce will be making 10 million plus. Players like Amir will be scraping for the left overs.
