Raptors ESPN: Bayless looks good, Derozan not so much

Quote:
What upbeat story deserves more attention?

The winner of the Toronto-New Orleans trade has to be Jerryd Bayless. The third-year guard is averaging 7.3 points and 2.9 assists playing 20 minutes in a backup role, and has a whopping PER of 23.6. He has improved the second unit's defense and is trying to shed his image as a shoot-first point guard by putting an emphasis on his passing and playmaking. Bayless fits in nicely with the youth movement already under way in Toronto.

After being handed the starting role on a platter for the second straight year, DeMar DeRozan hasn't delivered on the expectations -- in particular, his jumper, which was marked as his main area of improvement heading into the season, has been a problem. DeRozan is shooting 33 percent from 16 to 23 feet, down 5 percent from last season. This has left him no choice but to force his drive with a predictable spin move, all too easy to defend.

It's true even I can call it when ever he goes to the spin move...What has happened is DeRozan has shown his basketball IQ needs a big improvement

I'm beginning to wonder if Bayless is going to see more time at the 2 playing alongside Jose if this trend keeps up.

I'm honestly shocked that this kid's been dealt so many times because he looks like a GREAT young player so far.

Well this is the perfect system for Bayless. As for DeMar, he looks soft as hell these days, boy should hit the weights.

Weems and Derozan egos are out of control

they both have one good game out of 5 and act like there running shit,

there not making the right passes, taking selfish shots, if your going to take them outside of the offence you for sure have to make them

to me Sonny doesn't play enough defence to warrant a return next year, I would much rather pay Igoudola 14 million over paying Sonny 3 or 4 million,

You say that now until you have to watch Iggy jack stupid shot after stupid shot.

How many all-defensive teams has Iggy made? Why is he suddenly being touted as this all-world defender?

I've always loved bayless and thought he could put in work once he gets minutes, as for Demar the guy is proving me more and more correct when i say he can't be a sta. First off he has no quickness and for a guy with his athletism. that's kinda bad, he could make up for it if he had amazing handles but those are pretty bad to. Demar will not be a star until he gets handles.

This and its weird how one can't play well if the other doesn't

If Scott Brooks has the balls to bench Durant, Triano should grow the balls to bench both DeRozan and Weems. They need to earn their positions back imo... Actually DeRozan needs to earn his position back, Sonny should be seeing the bench a lot more then he sees the floor... We need a starter besides Andrea that can shoot, and that would be Klezia.

not surprised
but no sane person here expected him to be an all star...regular starter maybe
I think he can be the first or second guy off the bench

You guys do know that Triano said he is asking guys to g ahead and shoot more. Not that it's an excuse, but probably explains some of the "chucking". It's working out O.K. for Calderon and Bayless, and that's probably it. The one thing I don't understand is why the team is shooting free throws like Dwight Howard.

Jerryd needs to give DD some 3 point shooting classes. DD and Weems look flat these past games :S. DD and Weems should keep driving the rim and let their perimeter games come to them.

I agree that Derozan has been less than impressive so far this year if you leave out a few games. And after during the off season we were hearing about all the work he's been putting in, and especially after that summer league I thought he'd really improved.

But it's his 2nd year, we're only a quarter of the way through the season and I know that's no excuse but no one said he was going to be an overnight all star. I think at this point we just need to give him time. Like the author said, his ceiling is still high and I hope he can be a solid starter, but for now I think you have to look at starting someone else.

if we some how replaced Derozan and Weems with Igoudola and Mayo this team would be sick

don't know how we would get that done,

if we get a 7 pick or higher I would prefer to trade it for Mayo instead of developing a young that might be a player or not, so hit and miss in the draft sometimes, Rubio if Minnesota drafts Kyrie Irving

Igoudola knows how to play defence, its only in the last 4 minutes he becomes a liability because of hte dumb shots he takes, I'm sure Triano would work it so Bargs becomes the man in final plays, or if Mayo is on the team for sure would be our closer

PG Bayless
SG Mayo
SF Igoudola
PF Davis
C Bargnani

it would be the same way Dallas does to insulate Nowitzki with all defensive players, with Bargs having guys who defend around him, obviously Mayo and Bargs would 1st and 2nd options with Igoudola being the 3rd option on the team limiting Igoudola chance of taking hero shots

Calderon will eventually start playing like crap and lose hsi starting role to Bayless we all know this is going to happen

could be next years line up

obviously this won't happen but there is a chance considering both there teams don't want them

Uh oh, uh oh, do I hear a "Start Bayless" grumbling in Toronto?
There's been a few of those over here, before Miller of course.
