Default Eric Smith: Training Camp Updates

Just some updates courtesy of Eric Smith from the FAN590.

Update regarding Jawai ......

However, if Jawai is sidelined for any amount of time, Sampson will NOT be Training Camp fodder; he’ll make the club as a depth guy for the front court.
Sam .... well .... being Sam.

Sam was also frustrated with folks asking about Chris Bosh’s Olympic experience as well. He says Bosh’s performance in Beijing shouldn’t have been a big surprise because he’s always been this good. He’s tired of people acting like Bosh has suddenly just appeared out of nowhere - ignoring that the guy is a 3-time All Star.
JO's impressed so far

While the Raptors haven’t been slouches on “D” in recent years, they haven’t exactly been known for their defense either. So a focus on that end of the floor could be a huge plus for the Raps.

O’Neal also stressed the importance of rebounding for this team - but not just from the bigs. He said the guards have to chip-in as well and the opportunity is there for that to happen in Toronto with some of the bigger boys the Raptors have like Anthony Parker, Jamario Moon, Jose Calderon, and so on.

Sad but true, too bad he wasn't getting enough credit for it.

Day 3 update courtesy Eric.

There’s actually not a lot to report. He had an MRI done yesterday but the results of his tests weren’t released to the media today. All I know is he wasn’t at practice this morning. There’s no word on any kind of timetable for Graham’s return — right now, it could be tomorrow, it could be next week. Your guess is as good as mine at this point.
Nathan Jawai is apparently going to see a cardiac specialist tomorrow. So keep your fingers crossed for the big man. I actually ran into him at the Rideau Centre (mall) yesterday afternoon and he told me he feels fine. He doesn’t think anything is wrong with his heart and he’s just itchin’ to get back on the floor.

With Graham and Jawai sidelined, Toronto is working out with only 12 players right now. That makes things tough for scrimmages and stuff like that so Sam Mitchell said he’s been taking it easy on the guys … not wanting to push them too hard during the first few days of camp. Plus, as Mitchell said, most of the players have been in town for 2+ weeks already - working out on their own at the ACC - and the core of this team is comprised of veteran guys who’ve already come to camp in shape anyway … thus, there’s no need to really press the issue … especially with only 12 bodies.

Jermaine O’Neal was banged-up a little bit last night - leaving Wednesday night’s session a little bit early after suffering a leg cramp but he was good to go today and participated fully in practice.

Eric adding his two cents after watching last night's scrimmage.

Last night at Carleton … I had a chance to watch the evening practice/scrimmage.

The reporters were actually allowed in for the final hour or so of the session — a rarity for sure — and we got a chance to see the Raps in action.

With only 12 healthy players (Nathan Jawai (heart) and Joey Graham (hamstring) sidelined), this is how the scrimmage broke down:

TEAM RED: Jermaine O’Neal, Jamario Moon, Will Solomon, Jamal Sampson
TEAM BLACK: Chris Bosh, Hassan Adams, Anthony Parker, Jose Calderon
TEAM WHITE: Kris Humphries, Jason Kapono, Andrea Bargnani, Roko Ukic
Full court 4 on 4

The format wasn’t really like playing ‘King of the Court’ or anything; Sam Mitchell just substituted the teams in and out after getting a few reps on both ends of the floor. You don’t wanna wear the guys out … keeping them on the floor too long. They were playing FULL COURT afterall!

Mitchell was blowing the whistle every few seconds … calling plays, getting guys into proper position, strategizing, teaching, etc. So there wasn’t a ton of flow … until …

They broke out in a legit, full court, officiated, 5 on 5 session. Two 12-minute halves. Black vs White.

BLACK: Calderon, Bosh, O’Neal, Moon, Parker
WHITE: Solomon, Bargnani, Humphries, Adams, Kapono

* Floating subs: Ukic and Sampson

Here are a few observations:
- Bargnani looked solid in the scrimmage - confident with his shot; decisive with his moves; using his body down low.
- Humphries dunking on O’Neal (not cleanly - but a strong move nonetheless) and then nearly getting him again on a steal and break-away that O’Neal ran down and nearly blocked … before committing the foul and sending Hump to the line.
- Moon nailing shots from distance and mid-range
- Around the 6:00 minute mark, Ukic came in for Calderon on Team Black, Sampson switched to Team White, and Bargnani switched to Team Black in place of O’Neal
- Team White with a 7-point lead with under 4:00 minutes to go
- With 2:38 to go, we saw: WHITE: Kapono, Calderon, Sampson, Adams, Humphries and BLACK: Moon, Parker, Bargnani, O’Neal, Ukic
- Airball on a 3-pointer by Ukic that could have cut the game to only 4
- Bargnani with a nifty no-look drop pass to O’Neal in the lane
- Hump iced the first half with a 17-footer with :30 seconds to go
At the “half” … WHITE leads 21-14.

For my money, the best player in the opening 12:00 minutes was Humphries. Defence, rebounding, knockin’ down shots … Hump did it all. He was solid.
Less than :90 seconds into the second half, Mitchell ended the ‘game’ with WHITE leading 23-16. And what came next?

Wind sprints.

EVERY player had to go to the free throw line and take 3 shots. For each shot that a guy missed, every player had to run down the floor and back. If the shot was made, nobody had to run.

Here’s how it went down:
O’Neal – 0 for 3
Adams – 2 for 3
Ukic – 2 for 3
Humphries – 3 for 3
Sampson – 1 for 3
Solomon – 2 for 3
Parker – 2 for 3
Moon – 3 for 3
Bargnani – 2 for 3
Bosh – 3 for 3
Kapono – 2 for 3
Calderon – 3 for 3

FINAL NOTE: The official word has come down on Joey Graham: Mild hamstring strain. He’s listed as day to day.

yeah ... summer league and training sessions are the best indicator of real performance I love humphries, and he's very good at what he does best, but just like joey, he's missing something upstairs. I've seen a few game-in-an-hours on Raptors tv these past weeks, and some of the thing I've seen Humpries do make you climb the walls ...
