Anyway …

Here’s the long-awaited update on Raptor man-myth-legend, Pops Mensah-Bonsu.

Many of you out there - including my man Arsenalist (rare shout-out) - have been asking exactly what the heck is going on with Pops? What’s his status - or lack there of - with the Raps?

Here ya go … straight from some folks I talked to within the organization (with some added info on Carlos Delfino as well):

- Toronto withdrew their Qualifying Offers to both Mensah-Bonsu and Delfino but did not renounce their rights.

- When the Qualifying Offers were originally issued, both players became RESTRICTED free agents. However, once those Qualifying Offers were withdrawn, both players returned to UNRESTRICTED free agent status. Buuuuut …

- They are still, technically, “the Raptors’ UFA’s” until they sign with another NBA team or Toronto renounces them.

Again, that info comes straight from the Raptors … and from folks with deeper knowledge of the league rules and the CBA than you or I will ever have.

Of course the bigger question is … Will either player be on the Raps’ roster this season?

There is heavy interest in bringing back Delfino — a fact that you’ve heard about ad nauseam. But a deal that both sides can agree upon has yet to be reach.

And is Pops a back-up plan to Rasho Nesterovic … if Toronto can’t re-sign the big Slovenian?

Or do they want Pops not matter what … but simply can’t make room for him given that their roster would sit at 15 if Delfino and Nesterovic were added and no other deal (to clear a roster spot) was made?

There are still a lot of questions swirling around the Raptors, but hopefully the above info - especially related to Pops - answers a few of the queries.

Enjoy your Thursday.

Hopefully the Raptors can find some room for Pops on the roster. It wouldnt hurt to have BOTH Pops and Rasho in the lineup

Both Delfino and Pops are unrestricted free agents. With no teams showing any interests shows their perspective value in the league. If they don't want to sign based on the terms given by the Raps, let them walk. These players have no leverage because no teams are interested in them or their asking price.

i think signing delfino will be a bad idea, hes going to take minutes away from Derzan, Jack and Wright. Also he is requesting outrageous amount of money. Please sign Rasho tho, he is money!!!!!!!!

If we overpay Delfino for one year and retain flexibility next summer, that's fine by me. Yeah, we'd have a bunch of guards, but aside from Calderon and Jack they're unproven. Delfino is a versatile guy, I think we'd find minutes for him.

As for Pops... I'd like to see him back, but something will have to be worked out with regards to Ukic/Banks/Douby in order for a roster spot to open up for him. Maybe it'll happen, maybe not. Colangelo could be targeting someone else at the minimum with that roster spot, too.

its pick your poison. i don't think were that great at defending the wing or the center position. both would help the roster

delfino is a tough sob to have out on the perimeter if you ask me and derozan is a young rookie who might not be the best defender off the bat

i agree adding delfino will add something this team needs, but at his asking price its little outrageeous. Wright and Derozan is going to eat up at least half of the minutes at the two spot, jack is going to eat up at least a quater of the minutes becasue just working the point position when Calderon needs a break wunt be enough for him. So is it really worth it to give someone 5 mils a year for playing potentially less than 10 minutes per game

also we have way too much wing players. Wright, Derozan,Turk, George, maybe doubly, and maybe delfino. Either we trade a couple of them or we are going to have a bench where players are continuously complaining about not getting minutes. I honestly would trade package a couple of them for a above average wing player

I agree we don't need Delfino. People underestimate Wright. I heard BC on the FAN 590 after the Hedo sign & trade, and Rick Carlisle said that Wright was the team's best perimeter defender. With Jason Kidd & Josh Howard, its a pretty good comment coming from a defensive-minded coach.

So we have four players Hedo, Wright, Derozan, and Jack rotating for two positions. The best wing rotation since VC-Rose-MoPete.

I don't think it's running in the off-season, and if there are any baseball games, they usually can the show too ...

I really don't see Pops coming back. They're already paying a guy $4.5M/yr to do what Pops does, only the guy they have now does it better.
