But why this fight even broke out in the first place is still a mystery.

Nobody I’ve talked to - including Canadian Men’s National Team Head Coach, Leo Rautins - seems to have a good explanation as to what Stefano Mancinelli was thinking. Simply put, it was a cowardly cheap-shot to the head of an unsuspecting player. A completely low-class, bush-league, from-behind blow that Canadian Aaron Doornekamp didn’t deserve.

And though this game didn’t “mean” anything for either country (both Italy and Canada were using this match-up as a friendly exhibition … to get themselves geared-up for EuroBasket 2009 (ITA) and the FIBA Americas Championship (CAN) later this summer), it seems like the Canadians got shafted on a couple of different fronts …

From what I’ve been able to piece together, it looks like Canada had a chance to put as many as 6 points on the board, but they walked away with nothing; with a chance for nothing!

- Doornekamp was also T’d up and ejected (for taking a shot to the back of his head then getting beaten-on while laying on the floor?). So the double-techs wiped out one another. Had the call been made properly, Doornekamp would have gone to the line to shoot free throws (and it sounds like International rules reward TWO free throws off a tech (not 1 FT like in the NBA))

- The lay-up that Canada scored while the elbow was being throw (well behind the play) was negated. The refs called it off.

Add to all of that the fact that an actual foul wasn’t called on the play (which would have = 2 free throw attempts (Italy was into the penalty)) and there’s your potential 6-point swing (the bucket, 2 FT’s off the foul, 2 FT’s off the tech).

But, alas, the Canadians walked away with nothing … and ended up losing the game 81-75.

Rautins told me in spite of this incident the Italians were still “great hosts” and he said he and his team had a “great trip” nonetheless.

He also added that “Aaron is okay”.

Team Canada will play for keeps later this month when they take part in the FIBA Americas Championship … beginning Aug. 26 in Puerto Rico.

Tnks for the article Doc...
I'm still really confused as to why this happened in the first place.
But it's nice to see Leo get in someone's face when he's always so reserved on Canadian TV.

I hope RAPS TV or The SCORE picks up the FIBA Qualifier later this month I would love to watch the Canadian Mens Team in action. It has always boggled my mind why the Canadian media seems to ignore our National Team and it takes a brawl for them to give a crap about the team. This is unacceptable and I hope to see the Canadian Mens Team on TV very soon

Welcome BRAY.

Well said BRAY and for the most part I'd agree. Our only problem is that we don't have that same appeal to a broader audience. If someone like Nash would come back to help out the program it most certainly would draw attention, but we don't have that "big name" that's going to bring people to their televisions to watch Canadian basketball right now.

Maybe in a few years with all these up and coming prospects we're producing, the national program will garner more attention. I'm just hoping that they'd be proud to represent their county and not be like douchebag Jamaal Magloire who's ego got in the way of him playing for his country.

welcome to RF Bray!!

I hope Basketball Canada reprimands these guys somehow, it's basketball, not hockey! I love doernekamp <sp> and i think that the Italian team needs to be sanctioned as well, especially during a friendly game!

I am glad that Bargs and Marco didn't sink to thug level, but only 7 points for Bargs is not a good showing at all...
