Default Eric Smith: The Day After

I agree with Eric. If Sam isn't getting fired and our hands are somewhat tied with respect to having the ability to make any sort of significant trade(s) that can help improve this team, toss that playbook and start over.

But after giving up 60+ points in the first half of each of the last two games, and after losing to the Nuggets by 39 points, Toronto clearly has some issues that need to be cleaned up … and fast!

I said on the air last night that I’d consider throwing out the playbook and starting from scratch. It’s clear that the offence isn’t flowing properly right now and the defensive side of the ball is lacking focus and intensity. I think a lot of the issues have to do with personnel (no legit back-up PG, only one ‘big’ off the bench (Hump) and major inconsistencies at the 2-3). But Sam Mitchell has to wear some of the “blame” as well and if the Raps aren’t able to play the way he’d like them to, it might be time to try something else. That’s what I talk about throwing out the playbook.

Play more zone on the defensive end?

Push the ball and go more high-octane as opposed to slow-it-down, half-court? (though, could your bigs (specifically JO) keep up in that system?)

Change the starting line up?

There are a ton of questions but no concrete answers.

I’m sure Mitchell and Co. are searching for them right now. As is Bryan Colangelo. The GM was visibly upset after the game last night.

The team was scheduled to practise this morning in Denver but that was called off. Instead, the players went to the arena and did some weight-lifting/training. They’ll hit the floor for practise tomorrow … before hopping on a plane to Salt Lake City … in preparation for Friday’s game against the Utah Jazz.

Colangelo was scheduled to fly back to Toronto today.

Tough times in Raptorland … and it doesn’t get any easier with the Jazz, Blazers, and LeBron up next on the sked.

BC Scheduled to fly back to Toronto? Maybe his first order of business is to go into his office drawer and get out those slips that are pink?

I never got why the Raps arent an up tempo team b/c JO and Bosh are not slow, take advantage of the athletisism of the bigs.

It starts and ends with JOSE imho. He was always a halfcourt type player. Would be nice if he could up his temp

Check this story DVS from Benzo ... it might have a little to do with his own demise with the MLSE. Not serving the players fast enough.

Raps dont run up tempo because Sam cant figure out how to incorporate the pick and roll into a fast break.

Not entirely true.

In 2005-2006 they had a pace of 92.6 good for 9th
In 2007-2008 pace was 90.2 good for 23rd
This year pace is 91.3 good for 20th

Our pace has been pretty much the same its just that other teams have really picked up the pace changing the average.

2007-2008 the pace was generally set by Calderon - he played even slower than he does now. Almost get called for not getting across halfcourt in time, then dribble out the rest of the shot clock. That was not on TJ.

Point was, with TJ in 05 or Jose in 08, the difference in pace is only 1.3 possesions per game avg.

If other teams picked up the pace, then our number of possession would likely go up, not down, since that number results from the pace set by both teams. No?

we're obviously playing at slower pace because Mitchell wants to play halfcourt with his two big men. Which is not a bad strategy, if you have a post presence you have to use it. It's not the pace that's the problem, if anything slow paced teams win more championships than the fast ones.
