Ed Stefanski: Demar will have to earn his next contract

This was posted over at RealGm, can't seem to find the interview. I'll keep looking for it and if i can find it i'll post it.

Their was an Ed Stefanski interview as well... only noteworthy thing he said was that Derozan will have to earn his extension. Colangelo and Stefanski has talked to Derozan and his Agent and they all agree that he will how have to show that he has to earn it as they have had talks to discuss his potential value. They are also prepared to let Derozan go into RFA and see how it plays out if need be.

interesting. it's a risk nonetheless though

MrClutch 10-07-2012 03:20 PM

i dont mind this at all, wish they had done this in the past with jose and amir

box92 10-07-2012 03:38 PM

it is a risk, hopefully we can keep him and he does have a great season and improves a lot

Shifty.py 10-07-2012 04:19 PM

early extensions are cheaper in general
Should pay now

Superjudge 10-07-2012 04:24 PM

Agreed.

SG is definitely the easiest spot on the roster for any NBA team to fill so if he can't even earn is contract, why the hell would we extend it? :sigh:

Honestly, if Ross can show he can hold his own defensively and hit the three at a decent clip i don't care if we re-sign Derozan. I'd prefer both have a good year and we can S&T Derozan for a legit SF.

Lowry/ vet FA/ Lucas
Ross/ Fields/ AA
Trade/ Kleiza/ Fields
Bargs/ Davis/ Acy
Vala/ Amir/ Grey

SG is definitely NOT the easiest position to fill, especially a good SG. If anything, SG and SF are the hardest.

I would say PG & C are the hardest.

Go ahead and look at the depth for PG and C vs SG and SF. A common myth.

well they would've had to be RFAs to have done this

basically the raptors have nothing to lose to let demar go into RFA, only thing is potentially pissing him off in not showing complete commitment to him, but in the end he'd only be an RFA if he doesn't show enough, they'll extend him if he shows enough, if he's an RFA we can match any offer and if we don't its probably a ridiculous amount we don't want to match anyways

Superjudge 10-08-2012 03:53 AM

youre right, but even DD knows he's done shit thus far to warrent a big payoff. Hang that carrot man.

Demar's character and effort has been pretty consistent. If you look at the age of SGs around the league, and the salary that players get at the production level he posted last year - I think it's safe to say he'll easily get 6-8Mil a year next year and I think B.C. would of given him that this year if Demar was willing to take it.

Demar not signing an extension is a good thing - it shows he is confident and believes he's a 10mil/year guy - even if he might not be.

Good C's or PG's are much harder to find.. 4 is the easiest spot to fill

Yup

As far as filling certain spots go - these things are cyclical. Around the end of the 90s, shooting guard certainly was a position where most of the starts were playing, but since then I'd say the numbers gone down as some stars aged or exited altogether with no replacements. At the moment, most stars in the league play 1, 3 or 4.
