Ed Davis versus the league

Even with all the basketball talk going on, I'm curious how Davis ranks up against the various young PF's across the league. Some talk about how much potential he has and others rave how dominant he can become. I'm not so sure.

From guys like Cousins, Munroe, Favors, Hickson, Thompson to more established young guys like Aldridge, Love, Bargnani, Gibson to a whole lot more..... there seems to be many names that could easily be considered better now and later. Are we over-hyping Davis or is he the next big thing?

6cubed 08-02-2011 01:32 PM

Fans always overhype their own players. Out of that group he was probably only better then Favors. Derrick Favors has a lot of potential though.

I'm talking about this year. In the future I think Davis can be better then Thompson and possibly Monroe.

DAVIS < COUSINS
DAVIS > MUNROE
DAVIS > HICKSON
DAVIS > THOMPSON
DAVIS = ALDRIDGE
DAVIS = BARGNANI
DAVIS < LOVE
DAVIS > GIBSON

Davis could become the most all around & the most consistent player out of the lot IMO

He must work on these 3 things to become the player we hope he can!

-He must improve his FT shooting to 70%+
-He must work on his mid-rang jump shot.
-He must develop 1 or 2 go to moves in the post.

I didn't put "get stronger", because it is a give in.

I say Davis could in his prime give you:

17-19ppg 11-13rpg 2-3bpg shooting above 55% from the field...
If he improves those 3 major points I have above.

Also what is Davis's real hight I have heard rumors that he is only 6'8"??

jeffb 08-02-2011 02:06 PM

In his rookie season when he started and played 29+mpg he averaged a double double, and finished the season with 13 double doubles (led the team) while missing 5 weeks + camp. All that at 21yrs old and he's undersized. IMO his instincts and intelligence seems quite high and for his age he's quite poised. I absolutely believe he can eventually be a top 10 or so PF in the NBA. Imagine him 15lbs heavier and having a better 10 to 15ft jumper as a lefty. I predict him to be a 15-17ppg/10rpg/2blk player in a couple years. I wouldn't say he's over overhyped, he's a special player. Him and Demar are easily my favourite players at the moment.

Aldridge is better than Davis for sure. Bargnani right now is better.... Munroe is better too. I like Davis though.

The only thing Bargnani is better at is shooting.

Not true. Davis isn't as good as you think yet. Taj Gibson is better than Davis, Monroe is better than Davis... Davis can grow into a nice player but hasn't yet.

tettays 08-02-2011 02:36 PM

As long as Davis develops his defense ( which is already pretty damn good) I'll continue to consider him one of the better PF's in the league. Leave all the offense to the other guys. But better free throw shooting is a must.

I can see him as the "Ben Wallace" of the 2004 Pistons and I'll take that over any of the young PFs in the league.

Davis is better then Bargnani at defensive intelligence (ie: positioning, help D), rebounding, shot blocking. As for Taj Gibson, if you look at each of their rookie seasons they're very close. Same RPG (Davis played less minutes), Gibson had 2 more ppg in a couple extra minutes. IMO the two are somewhat comparable, but i think that Davis's ceiling is higher due to his size.

Lats season:

Gibson- 7.1ppg/5.7rpg/1.3blks in 22mpg (2nd season)
Davis- 7.7ppg/7.1rpg/1blk in 24mpg (Rookie)

IMO you also can't discount him missing training camp and the first 5 weeks of the season at all. And Gibson's stats were mostly vs opponents bench players.

That's the main reason why Bargnani should come off the bench but I digress.

I might be going out on a limb here, but i think Davis will be the NBA MVP in the not to distant future.

Come on guys, he hasnt proven anything yet.

MARTYNAS 08-02-2011 03:39 PM

IMO Davis is better than Hickson (long term), and possibly Favors. Favors is very young though. Hickson on the other hand is... I don' know, hes just not good. He played good at Center position in the last 20 games last season, but besides that, he was just not impressive and most of the time - frustrating.

Only Cousins, Monroe and Love are young guys who looks more promising on that list. Other mentioned guys are older players who already founded their niche, while Davis was just a rookie. Sure Davis may not gonna be as good as they, but I dont think people really believes Davis will be the very best player of his position, and after all, it's not comparable, 3-4 years age difference in basketball is huge. Do not compare Taj Gibson to Davis, Taj is already 26!!

Look, try to post ALL MOST PROMISING YOUNG (u23) NBA bigs :
B. Griffin, D. Jordan, D. Favors, D. Cousins, JJ. Hickson, D. Arthur. D. Blair, B. Lopez, J. McGee, G. Monroe, K. Love. A. Randolph, S. Ibaka.
13 young centers and power forwards, not too much. And Davis is better than some. In power forwards rankings, I would say, Davis is ~6th.? Not bad, he is also a lil younger than most players ahead.

Rookies are not included. We need to wait to see them play. But IMO, best NBA rookie bigs are : D. Williams, K. Faried, M. Morris, Valanciunas, Motiejunas, Kanter, Biymbo, T. Thompson. Very doubt in Nikola Vucevic or Jeremy Tyler, Mirotic is not a real PF.

I'm sorry but I have to add to this ridiculous post.

How many games did Chicago win?

Don't Davis' stats also come against bench players?

Don't underestimate Gibson...

LX 08-02-2011 04:00 PM

He has proven something. He has proven that he has the instincts to defend, be slightly ahead of a developing play, and rotate and recover without needing to think about where he needs to be. He is an active defender, not a defender that reacts. That's pretty invaluable in my eyes. It makes him a valuable part of a team. How he compares as one player against other individuals means very little to me.

At the end of the day, Davis will be better than Monroe, Hickson, Thompson, Gibson, Bargnani(in terms of value, not talent. Hell he might be right under Bargnani right NOW at the moment with trade value.)

Cousins will be better, Favors probably, Aldridge probably, Love will be, and if Bargnani grows balls he will obviously be better.

I see this guy as a HUGE steal from the draft.

Someguy again 08-02-2011 08:27 PM

Wellhe knows how to frustrate players that mostly rely on their athletic ability such as griffin, mcgee and deandre jordan just becuase he has this natural instinct on when to jump to contest a shot, but for now lets see how his body develops

I agree he was a very good pick... though I'm not sure you can consider Davis better than Monroe as much as you can't consider Favors better than Davis. I think Davis can be a solid player though.
