Default Ed Davis smaller, but stronger

Quote:
The Raptors sent Ed Davis home with an entire laundry list of changes they wanted accomplished.

At the top of that list was to come back bigger and stronger to withstand the beating anyone who makes his living under the basket in the NBA must take.

Funny thing though about bigger and stronger. They dont always coincide.

Davis arrived back in Toronto this September a changed man. Hes stronger, hes eating better and his shot has had a complete makeover.

But Davis is not bigger. In fact, he weighs seven pounds less than he did a year ago.

I came to training camp last year at 237 and I didnt feel like I could move, the third year big man said. I was much bigger but it just wasnt right. Right now Im about 230 but Im much stronger and moving better.

Davis said he could easily put on 10 pounds in two weeks but that kind of weight wasnt doing him any good. In fact it was hurting his game.

They wanted me to get stronger and working with Alex (McKechnie, the Raps director of sports science) and Johnny Lee (the Raps strength and conditioning coach) they see the difference just by me lifting in the weight room. At the same time I didnt put on any weight. I actually lost body fat.

Head coach Dwane Casey lauded Davis for the work he put in this summer.

Ed is a different young man right now, Casey said. Hes more confident as a basketball player. Hes more confident in his shot. His ball handling is more confident so whatever he (drank) this summer in Richmond, he needs to keep drinking it. (Shooting coach) John Townsend did a heck of a job working on his shot broke it down and got it back but Ed put a lot of work in. Not just on his shot, but on his ball handling, just his confidence. His body, hes in great shape, he worked on his diet so he did a good job. I might have to talk to him about the diet part. I might need a little help.

small forward for smaller forward......

Ed saw that Colangelo like Acy so he's trying to emulate him.

With little depth in the front court, Ed Davis was given minutes in his first two years. With some competition, we'll see a more motivated Ed Davis. Maybe playing with Jonas, the "ON" button will remain "ON". Its also good that the best player (Lowry) on the team is more than willing to get on teammates giving subpar effort. Hoping that Ed Davis and Demar step up this year and become building blocks with Jonas.

It troubles me that his offense is being talked about more than him improving his d or already pretty solid rebounding.

For real! With the added weight he put on last year it hurt his D...Lowered his blks per game too.

Hopefully the blocks come back!!

I actually like that he's worked on his shot, hopefully it can be serviceable like Amir's, but the loss of size in spite of some added strength troubles me if he hasn't become more explosive. He doesn't have to be a stud, as it's unlikely anyways, but he can really grow into a very solid bench PF for us. Outside of our core of Bargnani, Lowry, JV and Demar, it's important to have young, athletic and energetic players that are not so one-dimensional. Looks like Ed is addressing some of that and it's a good thing. He could really be a difference maker in our second unit this year. Amir has a bit on him as he can play the C spot more efficiently and with more size but Ed has a chance to narrow that gap this year by not being so mechanical and awkward on offense.

Hopefully he just keeps getting better as long as he is on this team. It's all you can hope for really. Nice to see he's on a good plan though, strong is ay more important than heavy.

I still feel like we have a bunch of middling talent on this team, once we see that Ed can't bash with the centres in the league, he's again going to be fighting for minutes with Amir, Bargs, Linas and to a lesser degree Acy for that matter. I sure hope we can define some roles and get a tight rotation of 8-10 without rockin 12, 13 players a night just to make everyone happy, at the expense of quilting a tight unit.

I don't disagree, but again he isn't a center, he's really a small forward (and thats why he's terrifyingly shit) but he's on the squad so if he can keep getting less shitty, well, it's all I can hope for. hahaha

I thought he averaged something like 18/8 in summer league and when i watched looked pretty good.

Either way "terrifyingly shit" is a ridiculous statement. Especially coming from a guy that once said "how can anyone here say anyone is shit, these are professional athletes".....i'm paraphrasing of course.

Too many people expected him to be the PF of the future here. Don't blame Ed, he's just a little guy.

I think if amir can back up the C position permanently, Ed will be the primary backup

its been really frustrating watching ed the last couple years, but considering his age and what he's gone through his 1st 2 years this guys still has a bunch of chances to prove himself
i look at amir and how he played in detriot for a bunch of year and even took a couple here with us before he developed significant improvement in his game especially with the jump shot, i think ed is allowed the same chances, at least he has natural rebounding ability to start with

I remember seeing Ed at the grocery store buying large bags of candy from the bulk bins. Struck me then, he's probably not as serious about pro basketball as we'd all like him to be... could very well change as he gets older and matures as a vet, though, but doesn't look great.

So because you saw him buying candy once which may or may not be for him, he doesn't take basketball seriously?
