This year, under coach Dwane Casey, he’s down to six and six on 49% shooting in under 23 minutes. These numbers mean Davis can’t act surprised that the league’s assistant coaches deemed 21 others more deserving. “I take it as motivation, “ he said. “With the shortened season and the new coach, it’s been somewhat of a tougher transition than some of the other guys or whatever, but I’m learning from it.”

Davis learned his earliest basketball lessons from his father, Terry, who spent over a decade in the NBA with the Heat, Mavericks, Wizards and Nuggets. These days, Terry still talks to his son every couple of days, but he’s at a distance, letting him be his own man. “I know a couple of guys whose dads want to be so controlling, want to live with them and control their money,” he said. “My dad, he just let me live and if I ever have a question he’s always there.” Terry’s role wasn’t always played in the background, however.

Suiting up against the Pistons this past Wednesday, Davis encountered more than a familiar face — he found himself looking into the eyes of a man he’s looked up to since he was five years old. To say that Ben Wallace is close to Davis’ family isn’t strong enough for Wallace. “We are family,” Wallace firmly proclaimed. “Me and his father was like brothers.” Not only were Wallace and Terry Wizards teammates, they were both undrafted out of Virginia Union and live nearby in Richmond, VA. “He’s like my nephew,” Wallace said of Davis. “I’ve been knowing him almost all his life and been around him for so long, so I consider him family.” Wallace first envisioned Davis as a pro when he was in high school. “I’d seen how close he started to hang out with his daddy,” he said. “They used to work out together, get up in the morning and go run a couple of miles. For a high school kid, that’s huge to be able to have that type of discipline where you’re going to get up in the morning and go run.”

I wish Ed had the muscle and grit of Uncle Ben or he'll turn out like his father, a journeyman. I hope something clicks with ED, he is one talented player.

Ed is a talented but undersized player.... he's in line to be Amir in a couple years.

i was going to starta thread on Ed a while back, somewhat similar to the "invisible man: amare" thread.
what has happened to this guy? whats his excuse? with AB missing most of the season with injuries, you'd think Ed would be playing his ass off and breaking out. instead, he's stuffed on the bench and showing little to no improvement or even passion.
the guy was killing it at the end of the season last year. what is his deal?

Its nice how some fans have given Bargnani more than 5 years to develop his game, and have little patience with Ed Davis with less than a year and a half in the league with a new coach and a new system. At least, Bargnani had Bosh and the point guard tandem (Calderon/Ford or Jack) to get all the attention and responsibilities for the team. Yes, Ed Davis should have stayed in college longer, but wait till he bulks up and gets comfortable and adjusted with the system Casey is trying to implement. How is Tristan Thompson doing this year. He gets close to twenty minutes a game, and putting up similiar numbers.

Yeah, pretty much. But he's not a scorer, and if he was his play wouldn't be much of an issue. Bargnani couldn't rebound or play much D for 5yrs but every training camp many would say he was going to have a breakout season.......why? He can shoot.

Ed Davis has barely played a full seasons worth of games, yet to have a full training camp, been through a lockout, no summer league last summer, two coaches. All at 22yrs old.... Give him time.

difference Bargs has a skillset that everyone could see was very special and unique and had the potential for greatness attached to it.

Davis doesnt have that.

Oh yeah people were so patient with Bargnani and were so supportive in those 5 years.

i would say the first 3-4yrs most were quite patient. the thing that helped was his first two seasons we were a playoff team and Bosh was here.

Um. Pretty sure half the fan base jumped ship on Bargs during his historically bad second season.

Then again last year when he struggled in the spotlight.
