E. Smith: Teachers apparently don't want Colangelo back

Something tells me Colangelo won't be our GM after the Draft, or maybe even prior to that. The issue there is, if that's the case with everything else going on will they be able to properly search for a good replacement? I don't like the sounds of this one bit and if we end up with another Babcock type of situation i'll start to really lose interest in this team.

From everyone I’ve talked to today … Colangelo has NOT be re-signed.

According to all of the folks I (and Jonesy) have spoken to no extension has been offered yet … let alone signed.

According to my sources (and this has all been talked about in this space and on the air already) … the Feschuk article is still the most accurate depiction of what is happening. It basically goes something like this:

Larry Tanenbaum (and Richard Peddie?) wants BC back. The Teachers aren’t so sure. Silvestri especially. And because of the votes the Teachers have on the board … if they truly want to hold back on re-signing Colangelo, they can. At the very least … they can make it difficult for Larry (and Richard?).

1. You’ve got a GM - Colangelo - whose contract expires on June 30.
2. His new contract - if it’s coming - is being held up by an ownership group (the Teachers) that may not even be the owners when June 30 rolls around!
3. But if the Teachers are around still … they apparently don’t want the current GM.
4. However, will the other owner(s) — i.e. Tanenbaum — allow an out-going ownership group to control who the future GM/Pres. of the organization will be!?

And oh by the way … there’s a lockout (potentially) coming too!

I read the first sentence of the article, then stopped.

I think the teacher's fund found out there are one or two people who still like them, so they wanted to make sure to alienate everyone on their way out the door.
And just in case anyone wonders whether they are all about money, I'm willing to bet they want some cheapie GM in here so that they can show better books to increase the amount of the sale. Does Babcock have a younger, dumber brother?

Don Vito 03-28-2011 08:19 PM

Seriously.. FUCK the teachers, I want them gone asap.

Younger yes, dumber......highly unlikely.

just for the record teachers really have nothing to do with this. We're talking about a company who owns their pensions not actual teachers - just to clarify.

As for them not wanting Colangelo back... Personally i may not have a problem with this providing (and depending on who) they actually have someone specific in mind to be his replacement.

MrClutch 03-28-2011 08:41 PM

in my opinion, if were letting go of colangelo is there anyone who is better then him on the market? if not we dont need another babcock running this franchise.

I can care less about the teachers pension, if they're there for the money, its clear that you dont want the best for the raptors and its time to find a suitable partner

Chiggmo 03-28-2011 08:57 PM

I don't really care, I don't have faith in Colangelo, or anyone else to do the job right, we're a shit team in a bad market (as far as FAs are concerned)

Psi 03-28-2011 08:59 PM

Almost feels like the pension fund just wants to fuck it all up on their way out.

I can honestly say that I do have a problem with it. For as much as they all say they are professionals, I think part of the package here for players being in NBA Siberia is that they have been sold a bill of goods by one man that says they are a core that is staying together to build something. I think being settled helps you to get through crap seasons.

Now you have a cloud hovering over your head that says you may be getting new ownership, anyone from Isiah Thomas to Rob Babcok's brother Bob to Joe (I blew it) Dumars coming in here as the GM, bringing in any coach that would accept that scenario and the shuffling of the deck chairs that is to follow. And each and every on of them is going to have to learn the ropes and make their mistakes again. One of them being holding on to and appeasing stars that are humming and haw-ing about being here. And it can be argued that this kind of turbulence that was the catalyst for Stoudemire, Carter and McGrady leaving.

And for anyone that thinks they are waffling because they looking to bring in management stars, I am having a hard time believing that. Don't forget that it was Colangelo who wanted to spend to build this team while Bosh was here but the fiscal overlords overruled.

Maybe BC has too much baggage. Just recently, BC gave a full endorsement to Triano. He is hanging on his No. 1 pick who turned out to be a dud. Also, he has an assistant GM who was to find and bring foreign talent, and has brought nothing to the table. I wanna see what BC brings from the draft. Maybe for him to have another year, he has to unload some unneccesary baggage.

fancylad 03-28-2011 09:19 PM

i won't lie. i don't like this one bit. While i wasn't trying to be sarcastic earlier per se, i know that the pension fund has no specific plans to replace him with someone better. We all know that.

I'm not a Colangelo backer anymore, but shit even i would want him back next season over what i assume the pesnion plan wants.

I swear to God being a fan of this team is the most trying 'past time' i could have involved myself with. Fucking piece of shit team.

carp 03-28-2011 09:21 PM

If I was Colangelo, I'd be handing in my letter of resignation 5 minutes before the draft.... fuck them.

Claudius 03-28-2011 09:28 PM

I believe Grange had a great piece where he absolutely ripped this Silvestri character. I'll see if I can find it.

js12 03-28-2011 09:28 PM

They're teachers!

Most of them don't know anything about Raptors basketball.

Most of them probably don't know shit about sports in general. This is such bullshit!

Well now is a rough time. With the management situation, GM situation, coaching situation, Bosh situation, theres alot of unknowns right now. Hopefully most will be resolved before next season.

Just so you know.....the Bosh situation has been resolved. ;)

jrob23 03-28-2011 09:34 PM

at the end of the day this is a business, and Colangelo has a heavy price tag and hasn't done anything, i'd look to a cheaper alternative as well

Yeah but we still haven't recovered from it.. no clear cut franchise player just yet, but there may be one in the draft.. Kemba Walker.
