Raptors E. Smith: Tank, tweak or a combo platter?

I agree with his conclusion.....

Quote:
If I had a say, I’m not tearing it all down. There are pieces in place that can be worked with and I would fear a total overhaul that would be rooted in a hope and a prayer for Wiggins. If the tank worked, you may be getting a star-in-the-making but it’s hard to bank on a ping-pong-ball lottery system.

Leiweke spoke of different methods for a rebuild in Toronto on Sportsnet 590 the FAN Monday.

“One is a complete rebuild which means tank it and go in to get the best picks in what is an extraordinary draft and hope we get some luck in the lottery. A lot of pieces – you’ll need a bunch of picks here,” Leiweke said. “The second way is a gigantic master trade that with our existing pieces gets us a piece or two that makes us competitive and gives us a shot to be something more than a fringe team.

“The third way is a combination of those two and you build on the fly. He hasn’t made that determination yet. We talked about all three in depth. Talked about what resources he needs in all three cases. I will support him in whatever direction he chooses.”

While Leiweke did use — or acknowledge — the word “tank” on Sportsnet 590 the FAN yesterday, he and Ujiri also spoke of the importance of the 20th anniversary of the Raptors which is only two years away.

During that season, Toronto hopes to host the NBA All-Star Game as well, and there has been a lot of talk of “rebranding” the Raptors as well — whatever that means.

So if I were to connect the imaginary dots, I would speculate that the Raptors would not want to be selling their city and their team to the league — with the spotlight on Toronto during All Star Weekend — let alone selling their city and their team to Canada during a 20th Anniversary season with a core group of players that is two years removed from a full-out tank-job and many years removed from a playoff berth.

But that’s just me. We’ll see how it all unfolds!

The fact that there's still talk of a rebuild just goes to show how weak our supposed core really is.

Yay another rebuild. It seems like all this franchise does is rebuild.

Rebuilds usually entail: using assets to continue attaining picks (whether 1st round or 2nd round), taking on salary or giving up capspace in return for a pick, not wasting money on overpaid one-way players and having young players get all the minutes they can handle.

tank and rebuild, its different when a new g.m takes over, he has to build the team in his own mold and not try to makes the playoffs just to make ownership happy, he has to think long term, worry about the contract after this contract

how to do it, blow it up start over, it gives him 4 to 5 years to remake the team, by then if he manages to turn it around he gets another 5 year deal because this team is young talented, and turning the corner

the logic is to start over just from MU perspective, that's what I would do

I don't like using this team played .500 basketball there a playoff team, not really most teams were in tank mode, or resting players, we got some easy wins down the stretch

I see no reason why MU doesn't tank. He's secure for 5 years, e wants to put a championship team out there, and this core can't win.

one reason is, if in five years the rebuild is still in a losing state, the media will jump on him as if to suggest the losing has never ceased.... five years can seem like a long time now, but after the five years without any winning it may seem even longer.

Not saying this happens, but it's a reason.

still an expansion team 2 decades later...

Rotoworld summed our organization quite nicely the other day,

Quote:
Ujiri took on one hell of a rebuilding process in Toronto and will need all the help he can get to turn around a franchise that's been cellar dwellers for most of its existence.

And if we have a goodyoung core that actually has a shot at getting to a championship level, which there is no doubt in my mind MU can put together, the media can bite me.

I don't see it that way. Outside of our core, we got nothing, so trading nothing for something is unrealistic.
It is the talking heads/sports reporters that keep bringing the subject back. They lack vision and imagination and will keep repeating the same questions ad nauseum.
The web outlets are full of shit too, sort of like cross pollination of bullshit, from Y!sports to MSN sports to ESPN to REALGM to all the BBALL boards ... including here.

I dunno about blowing it up. But I think you have to put feelers out there to see what it would take to get multiple 1st rounders in next years draft.

To me JV would probably be the only untouchable.

he's definitely an untouchable if we were to blow it up. might as well keep ross too. possibly derozan, just because DD has shown he can consistently improve and hasn't let us down yet

DD as an untouchable?? Nah, JV and that's it. There's no one that I care to have around after him - maaaaaaaaybe Ross but only because he's cheap right now.

If you're going to tank then might as well do it top to bottom.

I still look back to 2011-12 season, one more loss and we'd be looking at a team with Harrison Barnes, Ed Davis still here + Valanciunas. I like Rudy Gay but if we had one less win that season we'd likely have more capspace, plus those players.

Lowry
Derozan
Barnes
Amir
Valanciunas

+ 15mil cap space for Ujiri to work with

And we had to go and lose that coin toss.

What Sj was trying to say was, keep only KL, leave the other 14 roster spots open, and forfeit every game next season.
