E.Smith: Raps fans are hyprocrites for attacking Colangelo

In his blog E. Smith calls out many Raptor fans for calling for BC's head and ripping into him, when as he says "we saw what he saw". Great points, and i couldn't agree more.

Now I agree that anyone calling for him to be fired is crazy.

However, BC is the talent evaluator, not the fans. BC was the head cheerleader. And most of all, BC built the team.

I see his point about the hopes everyone had at the beginning of the season, but the fans can't be considered analogous to the GM.

True but almost everyone, from ESPN to SI to journalists throughout the NBA were picking the Raptors to be a 4-6 seed in the East. So the fact remains that the team he put together was talented enough to at least be a playoff team, but for what ever reason this team has lost any chemistry it once had and any confidence it once had has also gone out the window.

I agree on all counts; just saying that a failed roster ultimately reflects on whomever assembled that roster.

True, but teams are put together essentially on paper. And if the talent is there it usually falls on the players and on the coaching staff as well as the GM. Sometimes Chemistry just doesn't happen, it's one of those seasons.

What I hoped that I saw was a good defender on the perimeter being brought in with Adams and/or Solomon, but as it turns out - that wasn't even a consideration, particularly with Solomon, who they admitted had poor defensive habits coming here. And to me that proved to be a big problem.

eric smith is a wiener. how does it make anyone a hypocrite for having play-off expectations for this team? the team is a failure whether you were right or wrong on your early season expectations. i don't believe in calling for BC's head, but i do believe that this seasons failure belongs on his shoulders.

also

if anyone has a safety blanket, it's triano. the dude has been here coaching change after coaching change.

i can't stand eric smith

'i haven't said this, i haven't said that' you're a fence sitting coward, that's why.

If Im not mistaken, I remember you liked what BC had done a lot and that you though that Oneal was going to bring that coexion on defense that was gone since Garbajosa went down.

I agree with the article. Most people here and most journalist around the league loved what BC did. And many of that people now want their their head. He definetly deserves critizism for some things but some people have been completely hypocrite about it.

Who ever is just blaming B.C clearly doesn't know how to handle failure and react to it. Everyone knows this whole year was a mess because of alot of things put together. But I will say this and thats the Raptors front office haven't made good second round picks and clearly they need more quality in their scouting, (and that is B.C's fault).

Eric's blog goes after people who've been calling for BC to be fired. While criticism of the guy is certainly on the rise, I don't think many are outright calling for his head.
Maybe there are whackjobs calling in to talk to Smith that are going overboard.
Sensible fans realize that one terrible season shouldn't define a GM's career.
However, this off-season will go a long way in that regard. Has his tenure been for naught? Are they right back where they started when he came on board?
It should be a fascinating summer.

I somewhat agree with Eric Smith on that we cant blame it all on BC.
But the one move I thought BC really messed up with was trading for JO.
BC responded to (07-08) 'Bargnani's a bust' critiscm by telling media and fans that he still believes in Andrea. Yet he trades for a center knowing Bargnani will come off the bench. JO had 2 years left on his contract and if all went well with the 'JO situation' this year, he would have still been a raptor and Bargnani would be eating bench for another season. So much for believing in Andrea.
Clearly the JO experiment was a bust and the trade for Marion is making this all look a lot worse on BC's part.
Yes we have money to spend this offseason, but on who? Ben Gordon? ... No thanks.
I look forward to seeing what BC does to turn things around.

So Eric Smith decides to replace Chuck as the ass kissing puppet? Good for him, I guess.

He's always been a fence sitting ass kisser. He's always been a chuck-lite.

I remember when we still had Vince (during the end of Vince's toronto days) and Eric would say such vague clouded stuff about him. just like Chuck. They're both notorious for trying to make things all nice and rosey.

I guess the problem is that they're "media" guys, but they're also employed by the team they are supposed to criticize. conflict of interest right there.

BTW... Mike Wilner is pretty awful too when it comes to the same things.
gotta love the FAN590.

Yes - exactly - I liked what he did - IF it meant a big improvement on defense. But it looks like that wasn't really the plan. To me it is obvious now that BC simply looked past this season altogether. He got JO as a piece he could move later, and he could have cared less about what he could do intrinsically for the defense.

We all saw problems in the backcourt and problems with depth, but if BC could have looked for and found just one guy to shut down the perimeter a little bit, then all of that becomes a little moot. I said so myself before the season started that everything rested on one of Moon, Adams, Solomon and Graham to become one of those guys. What I find outrageous in retrospect, and unforgivable, is that Solomon was brought over at all. They said he came here with bad defensive habits in tow. To me that should have meant that he just didn't come over at all.

correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't E.Smith get paid by MLSE?
I just assumed this b/c he's on the Raptors site

so why would he criticize any player/front office staff or owner?
He's going to back the franchise up every time he gets

Exactly. I touched on this in my post too. I don't know if he is an MLSE employee for sure, but it's high time that we had some basketball analysts on the FAN and on TV who didn't "travel with the team".

At least Jack calls a spade a spade. That guy is pretty honest.

Can't blame Collangelo. In fact you can't blame anybody this year. Why???

Because Jose is injured.

Now if Jose sucks again next year. And BC still claims he's confident with the inferior backcourt of Jose and AP, their will be no more excuses, and he will and should take blame.

Right now the shit is piling up for Collangelo, and it's about to hit the fan, unless he does something about his Euroleague backcourt and his CIAU coach, then he'll be covered from head to toe in shit next year.

If he doesn't get a real coach this summer, it will look incredibly embarrassing when he ends up firing Jay 17 games into next season like he did Sam this year, and his head will be on the chopping block next.
