Cool E. Smith looks at the western Conference

Quote:
July 17, 4:19 a.m.

A couple of days ago I took a closer look at the ever-improving Eastern Conference and made the statement that PARITY is back in the NBA.

But while the East is deep and balanced one again, there's still no denying the overall talent in the West ... especially with teams like the Lakers and Spurs.

As I did on Wednesday, let's take a took at the 15 teams in the WEST and ponder at least one question for each club ...

San Antonio - How is it that the rich always seem to get richer? (Richard Jefferson, Antonio McDyess, DeJuan Blair)

Houston - Can the Rockets possibly survive without Yao and TMAC?

Dallas - Adding Marion helps, but how much will losing Bass and losing out on Gortat hurt?

New Orleans - If you're not truly committed to building a winner around Chris Paul (or finances dictate that you simply can't), do you pull off a blockbuster or stay status quo and hope to ride out the storm?

Oklahoma City - The young core is incredible - and it got even better with the addition of James Harden - but where will the veteran glue come from?

Minnesota - Who is/was worse: Steve Francis and the Vancouver Grizzlies or Ricky Rubio and the Timberwolves?

Memphis - Am I crazy to think that my long-standing criticism of Memphis may come to an end .... given their busy (and fairly successful) off-season thus far?

Utah - Can we really know what to ask about the Jazz until we find out what management is going to do (or not do) with Carlos Boozer?

Denver - Did the Nuggets underestimate how valuable Dahntay Jones may have been to their line up - letting him sign with the Indiana Pacers?

Portland - What is going on with the Blazers? They're playing hardball with Brandon Roy and they've been burned a couple of times in free agency as well (see: Paul Millsap and Hedo Turkoglu)

L.A. Clippers - If Allen Iverson joins that team, I'm saying the Clips will be dangerous and make the post-season. Who is with me?

L.A. Lakers - While I sorta respect their explanation RE: pulling the offer that had been presented to Lamar Odom, I think he's too valuable for the Lakers to just let him walk.

Phoenix - There's got to be more to the Suns' off-season than just Pavlovic, Channing Frye, and Earl Clark, right?

Sacramento - Aren't you playing out of Las Vegas yet?

Golden State - With so many interchangeable parts, could the Warriors be one of the more active trading partners for various clubs around the league over the next two months?

If I don't check in on Saturday or Sunday, have a good weekend folks and we'll chat again next week.

Denver will get over losing Dahntay Jones. JR SMith is a beast.

Not the same defensive presence as Dahntay Jones was but ultimately, Smith is better overall.

What the hell? Why is Eric all of a sudden trying to go with the popular baseless opinion? Not only that they traded for a similar player who can actually play the game of basketball in Afflalo who is better than Jones by a mile.

HAHA Thrill I thought the same thing for the Clippers one. They still won't have any chance in hell to make the playoffs

I'm more shocked of what he said about Memphis. How the hell did they improve by adding Z-bo?

Did I miss something here?

Camby, Kaman, Davis, Griffin & Iverson?

I wouldn't say "no chance in hell"..... that's a damn fine core to work with.

Iverson is the biggest turnoff from that core, same with Baron "I only feel like playing whenever I want too" Davis.

You're forgetting Gordon and Thornton who are young and solid players. I think the Clippers without Iverson would have a good shot of making the playoffs.
