Some Friday Afternoon Thoughts...
September 18, 4:50 p.m.
It's a Friday ...the weekend is upon us ...but I still wanted to check in on a few issues and stories around the NBA ...
I will try not to pick sides right now ...I'll just say this...
The NBA not getting a deal done with the NBRA is bad news for the league. The coaches, players, management, fans et al., will suffer. The top basketball league in the world needs to be officiated by the top refs in the world. If the league's offer truly was "fair" (as they say) then the NBRA needs to realize that in today's economy, everyone is making concessions and MANY are simply making less, period. Heck, I've lost jobs this summer / this past year (and a lot of dough too) but I know I'm fortunate enough to still have a job. Some out there aren't even working! I think a good gut check may be needed - for everyone.
SPEAKING OF $$$
How 'bout the Miami Heat announcing cut-backs to their payroll - including the contracts of Pat Riley and Erik Spoelstra.
I love it.
It's nice to see that a "big business" - like an NBA franchise is bringing the financial chopping block to only the little guys. The big boys are feeling the pinch too.
Too often... in a poor economy... those in the Ivory Towers continue to rake-in the cash while the every-day "stiffs" who are doing the real work - making things click - get squeezed dry... or squeezed OUT completely.
Good on the Heat for tightening down on everyone from the President to the janitor.
THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN
No, it's not just the Leafs who are wandering around Air Canada Centre these days.
I was down at the arena earlier today and had a chance to chat with Raptors swingmen Marco Belinelli and DeMar DeRozan, as well as big man Andrea Bargnani. Patrick O'Bryant and Antoine Wright were getting up some shots as well - in an informal workout - but I didn't get a chance to actually speak with them.
Belinelli said that while he was thankful for the chance that the Warriors gave him, he acknowledged that he was happy to be out of Golden State and looking forward to his fresh start in T.O. He also added that having Bargnani and Maurizio Gherardini with him in "a great city like Toronto" has made his transition very easy.
Bargnani - looking even more bulked up (I'd GUESS -- again, GUESS -- 5-7 pounds) - said he was happy to be back in Toronto after a long summer. But we didn't chat for long 'cause I was in the middle of my conversation with DD when the big Italian wandered by.
Finally, the rookie, DeRozan ...
Aside from talking a ton about college football (NCAA of course) and his old schoolmate Mark Sanchez, the youngster was simply grinning from ear to ear when thinking ahead to his first season in the pros. But the most notable thing about DeRozan wasn't so much what he was saying - but how he looked. He has bulked up. He hit the gym. He looks good. He looks solid. Check out my Twitter page for a couple of pics -- you'll be impressed. I guarantee it!
Alright folks, that's all for now. I wrote this whole thing on my BlackBerry by the way. Impressive, I know.
Enjoy your weekend!
