Dwane Casey - To Re-Sign or Not to Re-Sign?

Everyone knows Casey's contract is up after the season. He's done some very good things with the club not just this year but in his 2+ years as coach:

- Instilled a tough, defensive approach
- Has become more adept at calling plays out of timeouts
- Many young players - such as DD, Val, Amir - have developed under his tutelege
- Has greatly improved on his rotations and clock management

There are still some issues with his approach, in particular whether he is able to get along with players and, therefore, whether the team will listen to him the long-term (note his rocky relationship with Lowry).

But if the team continues to have success, do the Raptors let him walk at the end of the season or should they re-sign him? Where do you stand on this?

I'd still like to see the rest of the season and see how we do down the stretch and possibly in the platoffs. If we continue this play then i wouldn't mind maybe extending him but on a short deal. Maybe a 1yr + TO kind of deal.

35 or so days ago People were hoping, praying, begging he'd get Fired.

I still am.... don't want him back.

If this team continues to win, it will attract vet coaches who may just want to take on a young and rising team.

yeah, i'm the same way. ultimately though if we're winning i don't see MU firing him since he seems to like him. that being said, i don't see him being here when the serious winning happens. so why delay it? he's not good enough.....still think he will be retained on a short deal if we make the playoffs.

halphbreedballer 01-10-2014 12:36 PM

I want him back only if we can have a true offensive assistant coach with him.
Post trade he has been coaching fine IMO

Alex 01-10-2014 12:46 PM

Nick Nurse was supposed to do that.

When we get to the playoffs and he shows that he still has no idea how to make adjustments on the fly, nor change his schemes based on how other teams are defending us, we'll see once again he's not capable of being an above average Head Coach.

It's great he's got the players playing hard and his way, but I still don't trust him to make good coaching decisions in game, whether it's our rotation, or making small changes at half time. I think come playoff time, if teams decide to trap Lowry, or double him on pick and rolls and take our primary option out of the game(which is very likely), I don't think he'll be capable of adjusting to that and we'll really struggle to score enough to win.

I am fearful that if we end up playing a team with a lot of playoff experience in round 1, they're going to beat us and it'll be a NJ repeat from 6 years ago. But on the flipside, if we end up beating a team in the 1st round, it's hard to see a way Masai doesn't bring him back based on the huge success it is for this franchise to win a round(as sad as it is).

I still don't think he's a good Head Coach capable of coaching his teams to great success in the playoffs, so I dont want him back.

What bothers me about Casey is he has coached the same way all year with his rotations. Even when he DIDN'T have a bench he would sit guys way to long. Now its working for him that guys can be fresh in the 4th because he sat them long enough and we stayed in the game. But he coaches the same way even when we are out of the game - with the Heat being the only exception I can think of. Drives me mad!

He knows the game, but he needs to grow some balls

for all we know he is, why do we give the credit to Casey, but not Nurse?

I agree with you but, one reason for delaying replacing him would be because the coach he wants to poach is unavailable to hire right away. Although if Casey keeps this up for the rest of the season, while also leading us through a possible playoff round or two, its hard to replace a guy when he works as well as he has with this team since the trade (assuming the team continues or improves further)

Big deal, he was coaching fine in his first season here as well, but the second season and the first 6 weeks this season everyone was begging for him to be canned. It's been what 3-4 weeks since the trade? Far....far too early to say that based on that stretch he should be retained. MU has 3+ months to evaluate whether to keep him. Let's wait and se shall we?

LKeet6 01-10-2014 01:03 PM

I think we can do better....

DanH 01-10-2014 01:06 PM

Casey has really impressed me with the defense of late. For that reason alone (and because Ross and JV are getting minutes now), I am willing to delay judgment until the end of the season. He'll have to keep up the stellar performance though to overcome the a) still existing flaws in decision-making and b) horrendous start to the year.

creative1mm 01-10-2014 01:25 PM

if we continue to play well and players continue to respond to him, then there is no need in letting him go

he is even coaching differently.. making the rite subs and even making better use of time outs. Like I said before in other threads, every coach we have we want them fired.. but at the same time we haven't made it to the play-offs in 5 years as well... why start all over again, we have the chemistry and the coach that players are responding too

th3answ3r 01-10-2014 01:33 PM

If we make the playoffs, I dont see him getting canned

I was one of those people back 30+ days ago that wanted Casey canned, and by seasons end I still want him canned. I'll admit the team has been playing much better, but at the same time there are a few really great coaches available that I would rather have here than Casey. If he wants to stay on in a defensive coach capacity then I would be fine with that, but not as a head coach.

RaptorsVictim 01-10-2014 03:56 PM

He must hit the road by the end of this season.

tdotbased 01-10-2014 04:35 PM

collins,karl,van gundy

and you all want a guy who still doesn't even know how to inbound, manage rotations, or draw up late game plays?

all this forgotten for winning like 5 games solely because of the players?

LX 01-10-2014 04:53 PM

I was never hoping for him to be fired, and i'd like to see him back. He's looking like the real deal now. I like that he's not talking up the recent success, but rather talking about steps yet to be taken to fully implement a program here. I like that kind of talk. It's about long-term viable success. And he seems to be on the same page as Masai.
