You're correct. The lottery is for the top 3 spots. After that it falls in line.

So if we get 4th in lottery we can only fall down to #7(that is if teams from 5th-14th get picks 1,2, and 3).

point being our chances of moving up a spot are better than our chances of falling

I wonder if the Raptors would continue to 'tank' next season.

I'm looking forward to THAT draft where there could be the next Kyrie Irving: Myck Kabongo from Toronto!!! How unreal would that be? Toronto kid playing in Toronto? Unlikely to happen tho...but love the idea

Thanks to jrob23's idea, I edited the first post, and added all of the teams that are close; the one's we're "competing" with.

Important games tonight:

Heat @ Wizards
Bucks @ Raptors
Cavs @ Bobcats
Nets @ Knicks
Bulls @ T'Wolves
Kings @ Nuggets

All 6 teams in the "tank race" are playing tonight, I know I'll be scoreboard watching.

Thanks - that's great to know

Well, now that you've thanked me, I feel it is my duty to tell you that what I posted turns out not to be true. Oops.

That is the tie break practice for playoff positioning, but apparently doesn't apply for the lottery.

If two teams tie for, say, the 4th spot, they split the ping pong balls assigned to the 4th and 5th spots. (119 and 88 - so 207/2 = 103.5 balls). In the case where there is a half ball - or partial ball (can be a small fraction if multiple teams are tied) then coin tosses are used to determine who gets the excess ball. So, in this case, the team that won the coin toss would get 104 balls, and the loser would get 103 balls - effectively the same chances at the top pick. However, this coin flip also determines the order in the case the teams don't win the lottery, so it can be important.

Apologies for misleading you before - gotta check my facts more thoroughly! Thanks to DWSC for the coin toss tip - rang a bell in my head.

Cleveland and NJ have soft schedules. Maybe cleveland gnna lose to charlotte or milwaukee, but its only cuz theyre team is in the playoff race. All the teams are soft in clevelands schedule.

Yeah - I should have remembered that myself. It wasn't that long ago that Toronto tied another team in the lottery. i think forgetting about the lottery altogether is one way of coping.

Yeah, at this point I don't care if they win/lose.

As long as our young players play well, I'm satisfied.

Cleveland lost
Washington lost
New jersey lost
Minnesota lost

The Raptors lost...

Now we just need the Kings to win against Denver (leading at half-time), to "pull" 2 games ahead.

It's not much, but...It's all we've got!

All teams tanking hard, and all teams lost tonight... no change in position.

Yes, soon it turns from grim to just a bit exciting.....when they are playing again next season, that is. For a long time, it was a set flawed roster. Now, it's what pick do you get, who will it be, what free agent will sign and what trade will fill in the roster.
