Draft night priorities?

Do you think the Raptors (if they keep the pick) should pick a big man (Lopez,Hibbert..other?) and try to get a secondary scorer with T.J + ?...Or should they draft a swingman hoping he develops quickly on offence and try to get a banger with the Ford trade.

My opinion is that they should and probably will draft BIG ,probably Lopez if he's available and play him behind Rasho/Bargnani for a year until Rasho's contract ends. And try to add a proven scorer in the T.J ford deal.

Lopez makes so much sense that we probably won't pick him

why would you say that? Are you implying that Raptor's magenement is formed of a bunch of morons? If they feel that Lopez is the best choice for us, they will surely draft him. If not, it means they know something about the guy that you don't - it's not like you know everything about he guy. If you read Hollinger's new statistical anlysis of college bigs, you will see that almost NOBODY in the history of the draft managed to stick in the league having a calculated PER like Lopez has.

It's irrelevant here if PER is a good tool or not, or if Hollinger's formula is worth anything. The reality is that based on a mathematical formula that is applied to ALL college bigs over the past 6 years, Lopez has close to 0% chance of becoming an NBA player when all is said and done.

So yeah - I'd like to get Varejao at #17, but not all tough, tall players have the IQ and skill that Varejao has.

Varejao doesn't have much of an IQ or skill. He has toughness and energy, and a little bit of athleticism, but he gambles on defense, and tries to do too much on offense. He works pretty well next to Lebron, and I love his style of play when he sticks to his role, but I'm not sure that's what we need here. I just don't see how a guy that doesn't need to be guarded is much of an option. We don't need a big scoring big, but he has to be someone that has to be defended.

We need to get Haslem for Bosh's sake. That still leaves us with some assets that can be moved later on, along with Rasho who would be much more expendable. Maybe the pick gets traded in some kind of package as well.

I think they should draft a big if Lopez or Hibbert are on the board then. Its easier to find a wing through trading TJ and an expiring contract like Rasho's than it is to land a nice big through a trade.

Oh and as for the Hollinger thing, yeah, well he's wrong all the time by using those stats. I'm not saying he's making errors in his calculations, I'm just saying his formulas shouldn't be held above what can be seen by studying the guy in person or through game film. Stats don't win games, people do. Lopez eats, breaths and sleeps defense. He's big. He's strong. He's tough. He can rebound. He's everything the Raptors aren't right now.

I agree the best bigs won't be traded for T.J Ford + Rasho!

Lopez is an amazing fit for us. He won't give us a lot of scoring, but, you could roll with Lopez, Bosh and Bargs as your bigs and it would be a great balance of scoring, rebounding and defense between the three of them. Yes, this means I don't consider Bargs a centre. I feel he's going to eventually play PF or SF in the NBA like Peja has.
