The Downside of Tanking - 5th Pick

A team with less than a 3% chance wins the lottery...

Conspiracies aside, tanking does not work in the short-term and is an insult to real fans. It may ensure a top 5 pick but what does that entail before a weak draft?

Tanking is for losers. I visited this board several teams when my team played the Raptors and I was appalled by how many "let's intentionally tank this game to get Kyrie Irving" comments there were. Cheering for your team to lose, and then have this happen, is a shame. Some non-playoff team fans support the tank but only one or two actually receive the benefits.

I feel obliged to post this. Hopefully next season Toronto fans will be more supportive of their team, even if the next class of draftees will be superior.

What a waste of a year. :sigh:

Give it a rest Einstein.

Nice avatar... I actually want the Mavs to win it all this year.

Cheering for your team to lose is stupid. I think a reason people do it is to feel better when their teams suck. For the most part in sports and life, it's cyclical, although some teams tend to stay more on the winning/losing curve.

Superjudge 05-17-2011 09:38 PM

yep you're right, but in all honestly, not one guy on this forum actually wanted toronto to lose man.

People just say that crap when they are frustrated. It was a good young team... good times are ahead.

DDUnreal 05-17-2011 09:38 PM

So you joined just to tell us we got Stern'd?

Ligeia 05-17-2011 09:38 PM

I think that you are attacking a version of the tank team that was a minority.

The point was not to hope for the team to lose. The point was to not be upset if the team lost. of course, it would've been nice to see DeRozan, Bargnani, Kleiza, etc. blossom and somehow make this team a contender. That wasn't the roster this team had, so why not welcome the development of the young players and the potential for the future in a season that doesn't really matter? Short-term winning can be traded for more valuable things.

XiaominWu 05-17-2011 09:44 PM

so, just making sure i understand your math.... the 12th pick is better than the 5th?

got it.

I cheered for losses in the hopes of wins in the future. Boo hoo. 5th is better than 7th.

Honestly - I'd have been happiest with collecting some more picks, but our guy prefers giving them to other teams. I really hope next season we see some extra chances at moving up.

blazers6 05-17-2011 09:47 PM

I'll be interested to see how fans respond next season. No offense but I think Toronto will be a bottom 3 team next year. Minnesota, Cavs, Clippers will likely improve much more. I don't see too much summer FA opportunities either.

If there is a lockout would that mean that you guys get the 5th pick again in 2012?

What a load.

There comes a time when most fans get sick of the aiming for 8th to 10th spot every year with no hope of moving up because all we get are bandaids and top players exiting. The team was already in a tank position and aiming to rebuild properly. Too bad guys like Harrison Barnes backed out of this draft, but you didn't hear the fans who got top picks in good drafts complaining that they got those picks.

blazers6 05-17-2011 09:59 PM

The only real winners that supported losing are the Cavs and Jazz. It's not just Toronto that supports tanking, but from my experience you guys do more so then the other teams that have little chance of getting into the playoffs.

Let's see how it goes. I'm not going to argue with people who justify support of blatantly losing. I understand that it "might" increase the percentage of obtaining a higher pick but it's still a gamble. Look, a team with less than a 3% chance got the 1st pick.

Lastly, in this weak draft the difference between 5th and 12th is not that significant.

Actually that's when it's the most significant.

Superjudge 05-17-2011 10:03 PM

ya but buddy, nobody here truly wanted this team to lose.

they just really sucked

/thread plz. I am already sad from this result why must he make fun of what kept us sane in making fun of our losses? NO ONE wants this team to lose. Tank nation was an attempt at sanity as a Raptors fan. It's not like anyone would go to games and cheer for buckets or opposing teams.

I disagree. Especially after working guys out. If you end up with someone you believe is destined to ride the bench at #12 because that is all that is left, you'd want the #5.

Now who are you who just came to tell us to cheer the team more? Jerryd Bayless? Julian Wright? Come clean. Who? WHO?
