Default Doug Smith: Raptors not tough enough

Well, duh...

Quote:
They are not going to consistently beat big, physically tough teams in a million years and we saw why last night.

The Nuggets took it to them in the paint, they battered them with aggressive defence and it should have come to the surprise of no one that the Raptors wore down as the game went on.

It’s not a fatal flaw but, in the parlance of the day, it is what it is.

Chris Bosh is stronger this year, no doubt about it, and he’s rebounding more aggressively more consistently than he ever has. But he’s alone.

Andrea is what Andrea is, a good shooting big who every now and then goes to the rim. He can’t successfully guard Nene any more than you can so they had to try to junk up the defence to lessen the hit they would take.

Antoine Wright’s a lot of things. Strong enough and big enough to guard Carmelo Anthony are not two of them. So they had to junk up the defence on Anthony, too.

Chauncey? Stronger than Jose.

Kenyon Martin? Maybe the most under-rated post defender in the game and a veteran who knows all the tricks.

Those old saws: “Horses for courses” and “styles make fights” held true; it’s simply the way it is and to have expected the Raptors to slug it out with the Nuggets and win was wishful thinking.

There will be games where those shortcomings aren’t an issue – they weren’t in Phoenix, they probably won’t be tonight in Utah, they won’t be Friday at home against Miami.

Luckily for them, they only play the Nuggets twice.

Bargnani moves like a string puppet on defense, its uncanny

Of course the elite teams are going to rip the Raptors a new one. The Nuggets played top tier ball last year.

I think offensively we can keep pace with them. Yeah, they exploited the paint pretty hard, but that's nothing new and the offense can usually keep it close.

I just hate the JJ + Calderon combination. It kills any sort of momentum or comeback. We were down four, Triano got those two on the floor, and Denver never looked back

agreed. Supersub at RealGM put up some crazy numbers showing that when the two of them are on the floor together, they are getting beat bad...legendary bad....never seen before numbers bad.

Why does Triano keep forcing this issue?

That JJ + Jose combo is even worse with how badly those two have played and continue to play.

bargnani can't defend nene if he's not allowed to touch him. He got two gratuitous fouls in the first 4 minutes, and he was visibly less physical after that.

Have you been watching the last 5 Raps games? Jose is playing much better now, and way more shots are falling

Shit man. You continue to hate on Bargnani, that's fine, but can you put aside that hate for a second to acknowledge that Chris Bosh's rotations really aren't that much better? At least Bargnani can hold his own in post defense situations. Chris Bosh still gets eaten up. Bargnani is also blocking more shots.

The only thing ever stopping Bargnani from playing consistent, aggressive one on one defense are the refs. I've never seen a guy get as many shitty, touchy, patsy calls as Andrea does. No respect, it's mortifying. How often have we seen Andrea get the foul when him and his man are jockeying for position? It's terrible.

he does get no respect by the refs and those touch fouls are irritating
Bosh ain't that great on D and I know that, I should always put Bargs+Bosh when referring to the teams D
I just wish Bargs would play his position better and I want him to be a better player. He does get a good amount of blocks based on his position and smarts on D
